How many gold points do you think will be needed to qualify for nationals?
How many points were needed last year?

Thanks

60 points seems to be the minimum number of points needed from the more
experienced coaches that I have spoken with.

Last year was somewhere around 40 points, if memory serves me correctly. But
what does it matter? That was last year.

It definitely is much tougher than just a few short years ago when just 5 or 10
points was all that was needed. This just shows what happens when the parity of
softball ( a different thread currently running in the newsgroup) is in full
force. I'm afraid that the Gold division will never be the same again.

Could there be an ego factor here?  Calling one division "gold" and the other
"a" is equivalent to an a and b division with other designations.  Unless a
true rec team how many 17-18yr olds want to play on the b team?  how many of
the current gold teams would be better serving their players by playing a?

Sorry, Jed, but you don't know me very well. It definitely isn't an ego factor
because if it was, I would be out spending every waking moment of my weekends
on the field.

Most of them would be better served playing "A". Since there isn't an equitable
system of judging and placing talent and because this is still a free country,
teams may register in any classification they so choose. Therefore, the true
elite teams in the "Gold" division must play games against teams that offer no
real competition and are a waste of time. But you may be hard pressed to find a
Top 10 Gold team coach who will admit to that. For if they did, they might be
accused of instilling a certain "ego factor" into the conversation.

It will remain my opinion that the Gold division has been diluted to the point
that the level of competition will never be at the point it was even three
years ago. The "business" of scholarship chasing can be fingered as the main
reason. Unfortunately however, there have been too many "non-business" people
who didn't understand the nature and the spirit for which this division was
originally intended and have brought it down to the level you watch being
played today. Don't get me wrong, it's not lousy softball being played, but it
could be and has been better.
