Grandstand News Update on Julie Smith Case
by Rich Rosa

What does this ruling mean to the Olympic Softball Team?  I spoke with
Danielle Carver, attorney, who represents Julie Smith.  Carver stated
that
this will now put all 39 of the players who were in the original pool
back
in
front of the Olympic Selection Committee.

The committee is mandated to use the results from the Olympic tryouts at

Midland, Michigan.  They will need to make selections based on the
actual
field results from each player during that weekend.  They will be
allowed to

use some discretionary factors such as experience but the results on the

field from the tryouts are to be the main determining factor.

To use an example, let's use the Olympic Marathon tryouts.  The Olympic
team

is selected from one particular marathon where the top finishers are
selected
to the Olympic team.  You may be considered the top marathon runner in
the
world but if you don't perform well enough to finish in the top three
during

that particular race, which is the official tryout, you don't make the
Olympic team.

The same factors are being considered here for the Olympic Softball
team.
Look at the results that happened during the Olympic tryout weekend at
Midland, Michigan and choose the players who performed the best.  Facing

these factors the Olympic selection committee will have to choose a new
team.

Amanda Scott, who also filed suit and lost earlier last week will be one
of
the players that will be put back in the original pool.

ASA has yet to issue a statement regarding this matter.

This really puts the Olympic team in disarray for the time being and it
will

be interesting to see the new selections the committee makes.  If there
are
any changes, it will be sure to disrupt the team training with less than
six

months to go before the Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia.

Here are the original 39 players invited to tryout:

Grandstand News Update on Julie Smith Case

I do not post here much but this one takes the cake. This situation should not
go away and Rodigonda or Atkison must take action to prevent it from happening
in the future.

^The committee is mandated to use the results from the Olympic tryouts at

Quote:

>Midland, Michigan.

Does this mean that the money spent to fly all the elite play to all those
other supposed tryouts was wasted. If this is true an investigation into the
expenditures and travel costs should be made to find out what happened. IMHO
someone should be hammered for this one.

Quote:

So all this time members of the committee have been BS'n the players into
kissing ***and taking all the ***handed down from members of the selection
committee. Its supposed to BASED on what happens on the field. Thats the way it
should be.

ASA will try and sweep this one under the rug just like they do everything
else. They are sure to use their common response which is silence

. The mens and womens programs should fight for answers and people on the
committee be held accountable.

I guess the WPSL and NFCA will now go after the NGB even harder than before.
They should cause ASA has proven that they can't handle it.
