New Coach for 7-10 year girls team

Post by Meril Thornt » Thu, 01 May 1997 04:00:00

I am an e***d new assistant coach of a girls 7-10 softball team.  I
have lots of experience watching baseball but none playing.  I have
many questions.

How to improve the girls throwing skills?  A few can throw well, but
most can't throw far or accurately.

How to improve their hitting?  The younger ones can't seem to meet the
ball.

Are there any good videos for kids this age?

Thanks for advice.

Best drill  I know to teach any kid, male or female to throw is to
put them up on their knees and position their arms so hand is postioned
behind throwing arm ear.  Show them how to open their hips and throw the
hand toward the target.  The biggest problem most young kids have is
throwing  off the correct foot.   This drill  will teach them proper hip
rotation without the foot work.  Once they get it down, they should be
able to coordinate their footwork properly.

Another drill to teach them to throw off the back foot and push is to
get them to practice throwing "pop ups".  It's impossible to throw one
without throwing off the correct foot.  Then work on their release
( Power T)  etc....

Hitting,   Proper hand applications,  knuckles to knuckles  etc
and bat postion.  Position bat in front of body, lean back 45 degrees
and then toward the shoulder 45 degrees.  Swing should be 3 step,
1.  Trigger.....forward step toward pitcher.
2.  Explode the hips, ( squish the bug)..Drive hips through
    through the the plate.
3.  pull the bat through the ball , batters chin from left shoulder to
right shoulder watching bat hit the ball.

Hope this Helps

Just remember, they are only 7-10 years old. The best thing you can do is
make the softball experience enjoyable for them so they will want to keep
coming back.
They will learn quickly and amaze you at what they CAN do.
