What do travel ball coaches/managers look for in a player(parents) before
selecting them to play for their team?

I looked for talent. I rarely look at the parents since they don't do
anything on the field? What do you consider in regards to parents??

I wonder what age you're  are coaching....because sooner or later, you'd
better consider parents.  One bad set, and your entire season has just
become a living nightmare....I read somewhere, that  if you have a player
or a parent that is bad news, no matter how good the player is, you need to
cut them or the cancer will continue to spread.........

Gabe,
You are right on here. You should read the letter I got today from a past
players parents. All I did was ask for them to pay for playing with us for
6 months and they think they are too good to pay. I should just be glad she
graced us with her presence.

It depends on what a person wants for the season. Can you overlook the
complainer who thinks his daughter should play short but is "stuck" at 1st.
Will they help with any fundraisers or will they stay to themselves and not
help at all. I think the parents and players come as a package. Its always
nice to lose a player because some unhappy parent wants to vent to all the
others about what a jerk you are and the other parents cant stand hearing
him any more.

I would bet that every team has parents that *** and complain...there
are kids with attitudes...some can play for one coach and not
another...some parents turn vicious when they are cut....others sit behind
the backstop and complain about everything  the coach even has thought
about doing..
Do you trust what some other coach has told you about a parent or kid?  Or
do you have your try-outs and try to judge the kid basically on their
ability and hope that problems can be dealt with on an individual basis???

Typically a player will make your team on her own merrits.  It's not until
later that you realize that the parents are a piece of work!  Do you suck
it up for a while, or do you cut them immediately???  Based on my
experience, the sooner you cut them the better off your team will be

In my opinion:
Players who bust their butts at tryouts and really want to improve.
Parents who will stay out of the way.  Many times we have not taken a
player simply because her parents (usually dad) were idiots.

True enough.  But it's a shame to punish a child for a handicap they've had
 since birth.
