(FP) ANNOUNCEMENT NEW FASTPITCH CYBERZINE

Post by Tim Ada » Sun, 19 May 1996 04:00:00

Dear Fastpitch Friends:

During the Summer I am going to attempt to create a weekly ***zine
(magazine) dedicated to fastpitch softball.  It will feature articles,
interviews, and updates about what is going on across the nation in our
sport.  Most of the NEWS will be from the "GIRLS" but it will also include
some news about men's fastpitch.
I am counting on your help.  The magazine will be linked web pages.
With pictures.  News must be reported to me via e-mail by Monday MID-NIGHT.
This will help facilitate all those big tourneys.  There will be no regional
bias ala mid-west vs. west etc.  I now have a pretty quick way of
integrating text, pictures, and web pages.  So all I need is NEWS.  It will
be quicker, faster, and better than any monthly magazine.  IT'S ALSO FREE!
I will be asking some of you to contribute special articles about what's
happening in your geographical area.
Please help me in this venture.  During the Summer it will be weekly.
During the Fall, Winter, and Spring it will be monthly.  Look for the
premiere issue around Memorial Day!  You'll get a personal announcement and
address!

(FP) ANNOUNCEMENT NEW FASTPITCH CYBERZINE

Tim, you don't need to start a fastpitch ***zine. Just provide pages with
LINKS. That's good enough. I think the Sluggers home page is an excellent
***Zine all by itself.

I was two hours online last night reading all the travel, college, etc. web
pages out of links from Sluggers and from my own. It was fun, informative,
reasonably up-to-date, etc. Certainly better than FastPitch World or
TravelBall.

You can be sure all the Gold travel tournaments around here will be posted
not only on my Web but also on rec.sport.softball.

This Internet thing is really going to take off. I receive calls here at
home from people knowing I was on the Internet and that's where they heard
of me. About one-third of the girls on my HS team have jumped onto the
Internet to read the latest stuff, and that's through their parents. All
they did was keyword my name and they found themselves, complete with team
photo.

I think the Internet as it is today is where video taping of your players
to send to college recruiters was about 7-8 years ago. As the 486 falls by
the wayside, people are going to start picking them up dirt cheap and jump
onto the Internet for nearly nothing. I find my 486 completely adequate,
maybe more than adequate, for Internet hopping, especially with a TRUE
internet provider (not AOL, Prodigy, Compuserve, which are slugs, are too
expensive and censor). Many people participate here and on WWW through
their work places; that's great, too, and faster. Those of us working on
WWW and Usenet at home are linking at faster and faster speeds for less and
less money. Don't worry, and don't jump the gun, Tim. There is plenty here
already. Our real task is helping those who are afraid to send messages or
are otherwise "read only" members of the internet to come out of their
shell and say something. A ***Pitch magazine would only keep those people
from participating in this interactive forum as it makes it too easy to
just sit there on their butts. I do believe AOL, Prodigy and Compuserve all
provide FREE Web sites for each member, as well. I think a WWW TRAINER
would be more appropriate.

Fastpitch ***Zine could include a few comments up front from those who
run it, which right now is YOU, Tim. I'm sure Cathi Aradi will be looking
for a job, soon....Otherwise, the table of contents should be nothing more
than links to other pages on the Web that provide the information you want
to provide.

I have no trouble putting my comments on my own Web page. Just link to it.
Why should I have to submit an article to you?

Vince:
What's the deal, I thought we were going to discuss this!  People want a digest that
will give them as much up to date info as possible!  No one likes to spen an hour on line!
In fasct for most people it costs for people who are on line searching for up to date
news.
Usenet is good!  But for some reason no one reads it all or even has access!

Still a viable idea...what happened to the 3 way call?
