Women's Sabre Qualifying for Nationals

Women's Sabre Qualifying for Nationals

Post by SDan » Sat, 20 Jan 1996 04:00:00

Now that there are North American Cups for women's sabre, do any women
automatically qualify for National Championships as a result of placement
in these events?  According to the 1991 edition of the Operations Manual,
certain finishes would automatically qualify a fencer for Division I (I am
referring to page 24, Rule A(4)).  Since there is no Division I
competition in this case, do this apply to Division II?

The men seem to be able to send more fencers to Nationals because many of
the competing fencers qualify through other means.  The women seem limited
to qualifying by prior year results and competition in the division and
sectional qualifiers.

By the way, has anyone seen the new Operations Manual?

Thanks.

You can qualify for Nationals via Divisional and Sectional tournaments.
This is usually quite easy since there are so few women sabre fencers in
most divisions.  I usually just have to tell the divisional president I
want to go, and he puts my name down (I don't even get to fence since I
am the only competitive woman sabre fencer in the state).  I don't have
the rules book handy, but the top three will qualify from the Divisionals
if you have less than 10 (? - I'm not sure of the cut-off number, but it's
something like that) plus three alternates if any of the top three don't
go.  More will qualify if you have more fencers.  Other fencers can
qualify through the Sectionals if they haven't qualified through the
Divisionals, but again, I don't remember the numbers.  Between the
Divisionals and Sectionals, I can't imagine any woman not qualifing for
the Nationals.  This is one of the many perks of being a woman
sabre fencer!

In my division (Metro NY) we do have competition for qualifying spots.
Last year we left a couple of women behind and this year the number may
increase.  With the current setup most of the same fencers will qualify
and the newer fencers will not.

Since the National Championships is the way we get many of the women saber
fencers interested in competition, I think it is important that more women
get the opportunity to attend.  The showing we had at last year's
Championships was impressive, for us to keep growing we have to encourage
more women to compete.  I look forward to the day when we have to qualify
to keep our numbers down!

This is also true if you are a woman foil fencer with too much
time on your hands.  If you happen think you will go to Nationals in
foil, heck, why not go in sabre too?

By all means, send us your women foil fencers!  They will be in for a surprise.
There are actually women who train solely in sabre these days!
