I am considering either EMU or MSU (in Michigan) for college next
year, and want to continue fencing.  I haven't been able to collect a
whole lot of info elsewhere, so I was wondering if anyone here had any
opinions about fencing at either school.  I vaguely know that MSU has a
good program and EMU is so-so.

Thanks in advance.

I'm a collegiate fencer at Boston College, but I'm from Michigan.  I have
a couple of friends who fence for MSU, and I understand they don't have a
women's varsity team.  I wouldn't trust any school that can't carry women
as well as men.  As for EMU, they have been a respceted team in their
league for a while, and have been known to go far in the past.  That
doesn't say whether they are going far right now, and I would guess they
have an easier league than MSU. That's about all I can tell you.  If you
want a power fencing team, try Wayne State, if you can get on the team.

Wish I could tell yoiu more.

questions you figure I can answer.

Funny, until last year my school had a womens' varsity but no
mens' -go figure.  Now we have both.

MSU doesn't have a women's Varsity, but if they make it Coach Freigheit
will let them fence with the men.

MSU has had a women's club team now and again, depending on interest
level.

EMU does not even have a fencing program at this time.  They had a club,
headed by Jim Vesper in the early and mid 80's, but that is long gone.

MSU has a funded Varsity team, complete with a REAL coach, team equipment,
trainers, fencing facility, and all other Varsity perks.   The reason
MSU doesn't have a Women's Varsity is that there seems to be very little
interest from the women in Fencing, and it is hard to lobby for something
when you can't field a team.

BTW:  What friends of yours are at MSU?

I have been associated with MSU and the Fencing program since 1983, and,
unless I really missed something, there has never been a VARSITY fencing
program, sanctioned by MSU for women.  From 1985-89 Emily Stonehouse
fenced as the women's team, but it was not Varsity (even though she often
traveled with the team).  In the late 80's and early 90's there were a
few fencers off an on (Kelly, who's last name I am drawing a blank on,
most notably) and a full squad in 1993, but even that was a on-off affair.

It may be possible that the reason a Womens Varsity team was never formed
was due to this NCAA rule, but I can assure you one was not disbanded
because of it.

It would be unusual, although still disappointing, if this were the case.  The
NCAA rule regarding equality of men's and women's sports (Title IX, I think)
has typically been having the reverse effect.  Since most schools have a
limited athletic budget (At least for non-revenue teams :-)) they usually have
to cut or eliminate men's programs to comply rather than adding additional
support for women.

fencing program had more to do with NCAA rules regarding equal number of

If MSU is Michigan State University, they women were not a Varsity team
while I was there (1976-1980).   There were a club, and funded their own
travel and equipment.
