NEW YORK - Third-seeded Lisa Arce/Holly McPeak earned a spot in the
final rounds here Saturday (Aug. 10) after play during the third of
four days of competition in the $75,000 Evian Invitational at
Rumsey Playfield in Central Park.

Considered to be the "toughest" event on the Evian Women's Pro
Beach Volleyball Tour, the Evian Invitational concludes Sunday
starting at 8 a.m. (EDT) Rumsey Playfield with six matches.  The
event is "free".

The Arce/McPeak tandem has a 5-1 match mark in the competition to
ensure a spot among the top three finishers of the round-robin

After losing a 15-12 match to second-seeded Karolyn Kirby and Nancy
Reno, Arce and McPeak downed top-seeded Barbra Fontana Harris and
Linda Hanley 15-12 and fourth-seeded Patty Dodd and Angela Rock 15-

Five teams remain in contention for the final two spots led by the
Kirby and Reno with a 4-2 match mark.

Kirby and Reno opened with a win over Arce and McPeak followed by
a 15-7 win over fourth-seeded Dodd and Rock.  However, Kirby and
Reno dropped a 15-13 match to top-seeded Fontana Harris and Hanley.

The tandems of Dodd/Rock, Karrie Poppinga/Christine Schaefer and
Elaine Roque/Dennie Shupryt-Knoop remain in contention for a spot
in the finals along with Fontana Harris and Hanley.  All four teams
have a 3-3 match mark.

The seventh annual Evian Invitational is the second of four "major"
events on the 1996 Evian Tour.  The eight-team round-robin event
concludes Sunday with the last four round-robin matches starting at
8 a.m.

The teams with the top three records advance to Sunday's finals.
The teams with the second- and third-best round-robin match marks
will play at 12:30 p.m. Sunday with the winner facing the team with
the best record at 2 p.m.

ABC Sports will provide "same-day" coverage of the championship
match with Terry Gannon and Maria Barnes providing the commentary.
The Evian Invitational will air from 5-6 p.m. (EDT) Sunday.

                                   NATIONALS NEXT

The Evian Women's Pro Beach Volleyball Tour continues next week
(Aug. 16-18) at The Pier in Huntington Beach, Calif., for the
$100,000 Evian National Championships.  The 10th annual event will
open with qualifying Friday morning (Aug. 16) to determine the 32-
team main draw.  ABC Sports will televise the Aug. 18 championship

Prior to the national finals, the players will be participating in
"Evian Salutes Women in Sports" from 6-9 p.m., Aug. 15 at the
Waterfront Hilton Beach Resort in Huntington Beach.  The event will
feature Benita Fitzgerald, a three-time Olympian and Gold Medalist
in the hurdles, Lydia Stephens, Vice President of Programming for
ABC Sports, and Maria Barnes, a commentator on Evian Tour events
for the past five seasons.  The event is open to the public with a
$15 donation being accepted at the door for the Women's Sports
