Jose Cuervo tournament in Santa Cruze

A couple of personal thoughts on the Jose Cuervo tournament in Santa Cruz.

I went down to Santa Cruze to view the tournament and saw some
great matches but the final was a blowout and I was disappointed
since I was rooting(sp?) for the underdogs!

I have been down to almost every tournament held in Santa Cruz for
the last 5 years and this was the biggest I have seen so far!
IMHO Pro beach volleyball is picking up steam and is becoming more
and more popular(based on the number of spectators and the tournament
purse).  This is good for the sport, however I was annoyed at the
amount of advertising they did and the manner in which they conducted
it at this tournament.  The sport getting bigger is double edged
sword for the spectators...

I didn't really count but, between each match they played a
Jose Cuervo country and western song that had to be a ditty
converted to a full length song to be played and painfully
listened to by all spectators at this tournament.  Ugh.

Before the final match, the breaktime activites were pushed to
a greater extreme.  Parachutists were to jump from of a
hellacopter and deliver the prize money to center court.
No problem there.  What they did do however was have a dancing
tequila bottle in center court with spectators with conehead
hats jumping/dancing around in center court.  I don't know
how long this went on but it felt like forever.  Alot of
us forgot we were at a volleyball tournament.  It was
probably about 20 minutes to a half hour.  Maybe a bikini
contest would have been better.  NOT.

Later, the master of ceremonies(or announcer for lack of a better
term) tried to get the audience to chant Cuervo for one parachutist
and then Margarita for the other parachutist trying to get us to
chant the product name.  And one last thing.  We were subject
to geographic and age polls via the announcer having us clap
at every break.

It was a heck of alot to endure before watching a blowout match!
Maybe it's not better that this sport gets bigger!

This will probably generate alot of posts because this is
a grey area but while you are at what do you think of the
trend of paid seating on the beach?
