Call DC Recreation, Arlington (VA) Recreation, Fairfax (VA) Recreation, and Montgomery
county (MD) Recreation, or the Washington Sport & Social Club. (Beware the WSSC also is
an acronym for the sewage athority).
Also try Mid-Atlantic Volleyball (they operate a volleyball store named "Off The Net")
and pick up their publication "Service Line". The number used to be (301) 881-SPYK.
(Tell Dave Luddington Laszlo sent you). Also check the League of Government Recreation
Associations publication (monthly) Rec News.
Also, there is Columbia Doubles in Columbia Maryland, The Volleyball House (MD), Fairfax
Sportsplex (Springfield VA), and Vienna VA has events and leagues.
In DC just stop on the Mall near the Air & Space Museum (2 courts), 17th street just
north of Constitution (one net), or on the Mall "underneath" the Memorial Bridge (last
time I counted it was eleven nets). People play afer work, lunchtimes, and weekends.
Arlington has a recreational following in the Shirlington area there is a summer
tournament where they close the street and set up sand courts. they play in Utah Park
in Fairlington. There also is a sand court in the Park between the main Library and Lee
High School - basically between ***ia Square and Ballston.
There is a bar w/ three indoor sand courts in Alexandria called Capitol Volley, and
I've heard of a nightclub with an indoor sand court in DC somewhere.
Also contact the USAV Chesapeake region for info.
Scholastically there are notable varsity teams at GWU, GMU, GU, and UMD for starters.
Most have club teams as well. There is even a deaf team at Galludet University.
American U. and others play as well.
This time of year, there are tournaments every weekend some sponsoerd by MAV, most by
local charities for everything from MS and Easter Seals to housing and the homeless.
Many of the large one are held in DC on teh mall next to the reflecting pool between the
Lincoln and Washington Monuments. Notable is the American Youth Hostels triple crown;
Volley on the Mall, Volley by the Bay (this month August), and Volley in the Fall. Get
a copy of Mike Daly's master list of local tournaments He covers well beyond Baltimore
to VA Beach which reminds me...
Don't forget Ocean City Maryland, Rehoboth Beach DE... I think you get the picture.
This is just the tip of the areas volleyball activities. My apologies for those that
I didn't mention in this short post.
