OLYMPIAN FINAL NETS MCPEAK/RENO WIN AT CHICAGO OPEN

CHICAGO, ILL. - In a final featuring two Olympic-bound teams, top-
seeded Holly McPeak and Nancy Reno defeated second-seeded Barbra
Fontana Harris and Linda Hanley 15-11 to capture the Evian Women's
Pro Beach Volleyball Tour event here Sunday (July 14) on North
Avenue Beach.

McPeak and Reno, who will be seeded second in the 1996 Atlanta
Olympic Games beach volleyball competition starting July 23,
rebounded from an opening loss Sunday to split the $15,00 first-
place prize in the $75,000 Chicago Open.

After losing 15-10 to fifth-seeded Elaine Roque and Dennie Shupryt-
Knoop Sunday morning, McPeak and Reno rallied from a 9-4 deficit to
defeat third-seeded Karolyn Kirby and Angela Rock 15-11 in the
Olympic Crossing semi-final match.

In the third-place match, Roque and Shupryt-Knoop downed Kirby and
Rock 15-10.  Roque and Shupryt-Knoop, who dropped a 15-2 semi-final
match to Fontana Harris and Hanley, shared $7,800 for third-place
while Kirby and Rock split $6,000.

Fontana Harris and Hanley, who will be seeded fourth in the Olympic
beach competition, split $11,400 for finishing second.  Fontana
Harris and Hanley had won the past two Evian Tour events before
finishing second this weekend.

The title was the fourth this season for McPeak and Reno, who have
now won 12 Evian Tour championships since April 1995 along with 19
pro titles, including six on the international circuit.

The Chicago Open was the final tune-up for the United States
Olympic tandems of McPeak/Reno, Fontana Harris/Hanley and Gail
Castro/Deb Richardson (seeded third in Atlanta and seventh-place
finisher Sunday) as the trio opens play in the 1996 Atlanta Olympic
Games July 23.

The Chicago Open was a homecoming for eight Evian Tour players,
including Reno and Shupryt-Knoop as the Women's Professional
Volleyball Association staged an event in Chicago for the first-
time since its inaugural season in 1987.

Other Illinois natives competing are Nancy Mason (finished 13th
with Alissa Lund), Jeanette Kollasch (finished 25th with Jackie
Auzias de Turenne), and the tandems of Stacy Kammes/Amy Peistrup-
Matthews (finished 17th) and Erin Borske/Christine Rehor-Federico
(finished 17th).

Kammes and Peistrup-Matthews scored the Chicago Open's biggest
upset win by downing ninth-seeded Marla O'Hara and Ali Wood 15-13
in Saturday's opening round.  Despite losing their next two
matches, Kammes and and Peistrup-Matthews "cashed" their first pro
pay check by sharing $600.  Rehor-Federico also "cashed" her first
pro check by finishing 17th while Mason shared $1,350 with Lund.

Echo Entertainment of Encino, Calif., taped the Chicago Open for
distribution via Prime Network.  The event will be aired this week
by Prime.
