Day One results from the 1999 CIAU Women's Volleyball Championship
Tournament from Edmonton

Match #1

#4 University of Saskatchewan Huskies vs. #5 Universite de Laval Rouge et Or

Laval wins 3-1 (15-13, 15-9, 12-15, 15-9). Saskatchewan out-passed Laval by
at least a half a point (I don't have the actual stats), but it was errors
that ultimately determined the outcome of the match. Both teams played some
good defense, but Laval's superior hitter coverage and Saskatchewan's
unforced errors were the difference. After Saskatchewan won G3, it was
anybody's match. Sask. had the momentum and had stopped making errors, but
at 2-2 in G4, setter Carlee Thorsen turned her left ankle and had to leave
the match to have it taped up. Saskatchewan's other setter, Elaine Lee, is
also sidelined with an injury, so it fell to outside hitter Lindy Dunlop to
set for the team while Thorsen was out. The Huskies were ineffective after
that. By the time Thorsen's ankle had been taped and she returned, it was
13-4. Saskatchewan played well after that,  but the damage was done and they
went down 15-9 in Game 4.

Match #2

#1 University of British Columbia Thunderbirds vs. #8 Universite de Moncton
les Anges Bleus

UBC wins 3-0 (15-0, 15-3, 15-6). UBC's shortest starter in the match, #12
Joanna Langley, is as tall as Moncton's tallest player, at 5'8".  This was
the story of the match. The size and power of UBC totally dominating the
diminuative Blue Angels from Moncton.  Full credit to the players from
Moncton, they kept their spirits up through the match despite it's lop-sided
nature. They relished every point they scored. UBC performed well in an easy
tune-up match. They will not have such and easy time tomorrow evening
against Laval.

Later this evening:

6:00PM MST
#2 University of Manitoba Bisons vs. #7 University of Toronto Varsity Blues
8:00PM MST
#3 University of Alberta Panda vs. #6 Universite de Montreal Carabins

More results later.
