Stanford mens results: BYU/UCI

Stanford defeated BYU 10-15, 15-11, 15-6, 15-8 Friday night and took
out UC-Irvine 15-12, 15-5,1 5-10 Saturday night to improve to 7-1
overall and 6-1 in league.  I'm running out the door; hopefully to
post more detail tomorrow, but here's the quick summary.  After
continuing its inconsistent play, and very inconsistent passing, of
pretty much all season in game one vs. BYU, the Cardinal steadied
out and got into a side-out battle.  It wasn't enough against a
hot-hitting Cougar team in game one, but the Cardinal kept getting
better and more consistent throughout the match, and didn't have a
lot of problems.  Saturday was more of the same -- a bad stretch
early, then a nice, steady side-out game, with tough serving, strong
blocking and nice defense.  With the big, bad Bruins coming to town
this Friday, the Cardinal picked a good time to have what, to me,
seemed to be the best weekend of the year.  Despite all the
up-and-down play, the Cardinal IS 6-1 in the MPSF, and seems to be
hitting stride.  Depth, good setting, great middle hitting, and two
go-to guys in both the front and back row (Matt Fuerbringer and
Brian Moore), have the Cardinal playing like a team that can beat
every non-Hawai'i team out there on any given night (I haven't seen
UH, so I can't really comment on them).  It was definitely a
promising weekend for Cardinal fans.
