FONTANA HARRIS/HANLEY CAPTURE THE $100,000 EVIAN U. S. OPEN

OCEAN CITY, MD. - Olympians Barbra Fontana Harris and Linda Hanley
won their second event of the season here Sunday (June 16) by
capturing the $100,000 Evian U. S. Open on Dorchester Beach by
defeating eighth-seeded Janice Harrer and Gayle Stammer.

By capturing the first of four "major" events on the 1996 Evian
Women's Pro Beach Volleyball Tour, Fontana Harris and Hanley split
the $20,000 first-place prize with the 15-11 win over Harrer and
Stammer.

Harrer and Stammer, who became the first eighth-seeded team in
Evian Tour history to reach a tournament final, split $15,200 for
second-place.  ABC Sports taped the event for replay June 23 from
3-4 p.m. (EDT).

The $100,000 prize money for the Evian U. S. Open marked the
richest purse in domestic women's beach volleyball history
exceeding the previous best of $75,000 for February's four-team
indoor event in New York.

Fontana Harris and Hanley, who were seeded second this weekend,
secured the second spot on the United States Olympic Team by
winning the United States Olympic Beach Volleyball Trials in
Baltimore June 7.

The "major" title was Hanley's first in her career while Fontana
Harris was capturing her second Evian Grand Slam crown after
winning the 1994 Evian Best of the Beach I with Lori Forsythe in
Las Vegas, Nev.

The win was the seventh in Fontana Harris' Evian Tour career while
Hanley was winning for the sixth time.  Fontana Harris and Hanley
had previously won the Evian Hermosa Beach Open last month (May 5)
in Southern Califonria.

Fontana Harris and Hanley advanced to the title match with a 15-10
win over top-seeded Holly McPeak and Nancy Reno.  Harrer and
Stammer, who posted their best career finish together, scored a 15-
10 win over fifth-seeded Elaine Roque and Dennie Shupryt-Knoop to
advance to the finals.

McPeak and Reno, who were seeking their third-straight "major"
title after winning the Evian National Championships last August at
Huntington Beach, Calif., and the Evian Best of the Beach II in
Hawaii last September, finished third to share $10,400 by defeating
Roque and Shupryt-Knoop 15-10.

Roque and Shupryt-Knoop, who split $8,000 for finishing fourth, had
defeated Olympians McPeak and Reno 15-10 earlier Sunday to snap the
top-seeded teams 17-match winning steak.

McPeak and Reno were named last January as the United States' No.
1 women's beach volleyball tandem for the 1996 Atlanta Olympic
Games after finishing atop the 1995-96 FIVB Beach Volleyball World
Championship-Series circuit.

The 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games' beach volleyball competition is
July 23-28 at Atlanta Beach in Clayton County, Ga.

Gail Castro and Deb Richardson, the Evian Tour's third pair of
Olympians, finished fifth in the Evian U. S. Open after being
eliminated 15-5 by McPeak and Reno.

Castro and Richardson won four of five matches at the Olympic
Trials to secure the third spot on the United States Olympic Team,
including a 15-13 qualifying win over Roque and Shupryt-Knoop last
Sunday in Baltimore.
