PIRES/SILVA WIN ALL-BRAZIL FINAL AT GILLETTE WORLD BEACH VOLLEYBALL
FINALS

MELBOURNE, VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA - Top-seeded Sandra Pires and Jackie
Silva broke a four-event title drought here Sunday (March 16) by
capturing the inaugural Gillette World Women's Beach Volleyball
Open in an All-Brazil finale at Melbourne Park.

Pires and Silva downed second-seeded Shelda Bede and Adriana Behar
12-9 and 12-5 to share the $25,000 first-place prize in the
$120,000 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour event.  Bede and Behar
split $16,000 for finishing second in the four-day event.

Pires and Silva had not won an international event since capturing
the Ostend, Beligum title last August as the pair had posted two
seconds and two thirds in their last four FIVB events prior to
winning here Sunday.

In the best-of-three finale, Pires and Silva broke from a 3-3 score
in the first set to score nine of the last 15 points in the 45-
minute, 60-sideout set.  The first set had three ties and three
lead changes.

In the second set, Pires and Silva broke from an 1-1 score to net
four-straight points to take a 5-1 lead.  Bede and Behar cut the
lead to 6-4, but Pires and Silva scored six of the final seven
points in th 29-minute, 30-sideout set.

Pires and Silva, the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games gold medalists,
earned their 16th trip to a FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour
championship match by defeating third-seeded Lisa Arce and Holly
McPeak of the United States 15-11 in the first semi-final match.

Bede and Behar, who were playing in their third FIVB title match,
advanced to the grand finale by defeating sixth-seeded Karrie
Poppinga and Angela Rock 15-3 in the second semi-final match.

Arce and McPeak, who have placed in the final four in each of their
five FIVB events together, defeated Poppinga and Rock 15-4 in the
third-place match to share $11,000.  Poppinga and Rock split $8,000
for finishing fourth.

Bede and Behar, who now have a 3-7 FIVB match mark versus Pires and
Silva, defeated the world's top-rated team 12-4 and 12-9 to capture
last September's international stop in Carolina, Puerto Rico.  Bede
and Behar also won the 1996 FIVB finale in Jakarta, Indonesia last
November.

A total of 32 teams from nine countries started play here Thursday
in the second FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour of the 1997 season,
including the four teams and eight other players that competed in
the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games.

Pires and Silva, who won their 10th FIVB title together Sunday,
defeated fourth-seeded and Olympic silver medalists Monica
Rodrigues and Adriana Samuel of Brazil 15-12 Saturday to advance to
Sunday's play.  Bede and Behar, winners of two FIVB events, downed
Arce and McPeak 15-2 Saturday to earn a final four spot.

Poppinga and Rock had to win three matches Saturday to advance to
Sunday's final rounds, including a 15-4 upset win over Rodrigues
and Samuel.  Arce and McPeak bounced back from their earlier
Saturday defeat to earn their final four spot with a 15-5 win over
ninth-seeded Barbra Fontana and Linda Hanley of the United States
15-5.

Pires and Silva overcame 5-0 and 7-2 deficits in the first Olympic
Crossing semi-finals to win 15-11 over Arce and McPeak.  The
Brazilians scored eight-straight points to take a 10-7 lead in the
33-minute match.

Pires' block for a point gave her team the lead for good at 8-7.
Arce and McPeak pulled within a point at 12-11, but the Brazilians
scored three-straight points on Pires' serves as McPeak had two
hitting errors followed by Arce's miscue on the first match point.

In the second semi-final match, Rock's service ace gave her team a
quick 1-0 lead.  Bede and Behar scored 10-straight points.
Poppinga and Rock were able to hold off the Brazilians on seven
match points before Rock's setting error ended the match.
