Early match results from Day Three of the 1999 CIAU Women's Volleyball
Championship Tournament from Edmonton

#4 University of Saskatchewan Huskies vs. #6 Universite de Montreal Carabins
for 5th Place

Montreal wins 3-1 (15-12, 15-12, 5-15, 15-12) in 1h40min. Saskatchewan,
still without a setter, was unable to pull this one off. Montreal played
well except for G3, and the Huskies defense let them down throughout the
match. Defensive positioning for Saskatchewan was lacking, not surprising
considering they had to play out of position. Their offense was again
predictable, and Montreal was able to dig and block effectively. in G2, the
Huskies were down 13-6 and it looked like the beginning of the end, but they
presevered and came back to 15-12. Then in G3, Montreal started to fall
apart. Bad passes and hitting errors were the norm. As well, Montreals quick
sets were too low for the hitters. Saskatchewan won easily 15-5 and looked
like they were back in the match. Montreal settled down and won G4 15-12 to
take 5th place in the tournament. A good performance for Saskatchewan
throughout the tournament despite their adversity.

Bronze Medal Match
#5 Universite Laval Rouge et Or vs. #2 University of Manitoba Bisons
Manitoba wins 3-0 (15-9, 15-11, 15-9) in 1h30min. Laval's passing was again
lacking in G1. This combined with too much Christa Walker was Laval's
undoing in this game. The game was tied at 5, then some good blocking and
defense from Manitoba followed by five consecutive kills by Walker got
Manitoba up 10-5. From there they didn't look back. Manitoba as a team was
blocking very well. The middle blockers were moving from sideline to
sideline closing the blocks tightly. On offense, Manitoba used more 31's
this match than previously and had very good success. Laval played some good
backcourt defense, but Manitoba had the complete package: passing, offense,
defense and blocking to secure the Bronze medal, which has to seem a bit of
a disappointment for them.
