ROOKIES MAKING A EVIAN TOUR IMPACT

LIHUE, KAUA'I, HI. - A pair of Evian Women's Pro Beach Volleyball
Tour rookies have made an impact this season as the first-year
players participant in the season-ending Best of the Beach IV here
this weekend (September 26-28).

Elaine Youngs and Jennifer Meredith are only the third and fourth
rookies ever to qualify for the 12-team, 24-player Best of the
Beach competition as the Women's Professional Volleyball
Association concludes its 11th-season of operation.

The 12th and final stop on the Evian Tour, the Best of the Beach IV
opens Friday (September 26) at Nawiliwili Park with 12 team
competing in the fourth "grand slam" event in 1997.

Hosted by the Kaua'i Marriott Resort & Beach Club on Kalapaki
Beach, the $50,000 Best of the Beach IV will feature three days of
competition on two sand courts at Nawiliwili Park.

The County of Kaua'i, the Kaua'i Economic Development Board, the
Kaua'i Visitors Bureau and the Kalapaki Beach Resort Association
are co-hosting the event with the Kaua'i Marriott.

The Best of the Beach IV features both pool and bracket play.
Friday's (September 26) pool play of 12 matches starts at 10 a.m.
(HST).  The top four-seeded teams will receive a bye into bracket
play and will be joined by the top two teams from each pool.

Eight matches will be played Saturday (September 27) starting at 10
a.m. with six teams advancing to play Sunday (September 28)
beginning at 9 a.m.  The Best of the Beach IV semi-final matches
will be held at 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Sunday.  The third-place
match will be played at 2 p.m. followed by the championship match
at 3 p.m. at Nawiliwili Park.

Lisa Arce and Hawaiian Danalee Bragado are the only rookies ever to
compete in the Best of the Beach competition as the pair posted
seventh and ninth-place finishes, respectively, in the 1994 finale
at Las Vegas, Nev.

The 1994 Evian Tour rookie-of-the-year, Arce is competing in her
fourth Best of the Beach after winning last year's event with
current partner Holly McPeak.

Bragado (1989 Punahou High graduate), who finished sixth in the
1995 Best of the Beach event with Hawaii resident Karrie Poppinga
(Mililani), is seeded 10th this weekend with Ali Wood.

Youngs, who became the first rookie to win an event title when she
teamed with Liz Masakayan to capture the Chicago finale July 13,
has earned a record $12,741.25 for a first-year player.

Meredith is the top rookie in terms of points on the 1997 Evian
Tour after posting career best finishes of fifths with Leanne
Schuster at Chicago and Hermosa Beach.  Meredith is 19th in points
(168) and 21st in earnings ($9,635) this season.
