UNITED STATES NETS SECOND
NIKE AMERICAS' CHALLENGE WIN;

USA & CANADA ADVANCE TO SATURDAY'S FINAL FOR
2000 SYDNEY OLYMPIC GAMES NORCECA ZONE BERTH

Lakeland, Fla. (January 6, 2000) - The United States scored its second-straight
Nike Americas' Volleyball Challenge win here Thursday (January 6) by defeating
Puerto Rico 3-0 in the opening match of the second of four days of women's
competition at The Lakeland Center.

Canada defeated the Dominican Republic 3-2 (24-26,25-20, 23-25, 25-19 and
15-12) in Thursday's second match of the Nike Americas' Volleyball Challenge
that will determine a NORCECA Zone (North America, Central America and the
Caribbean) berth in the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.

With both the United States and Canada winning Thursday, both teams will battle
for the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games NORCECA Zone berth Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
(EST).  Both teams will play each other Friday prior to Saturday's final as
both teams have won both of their matches in the Nike Americas' Volleyball
Challenge.

The United States, which defeated the Dominican Republic 3-2 in Wednesday's
opening match, used scoring spurts midway through each game to secure its 26th
win in 45 starts since the start of the 1999 season.  Thursday's win was also
the United States' 10th-straight over Puerto Rico since the start of the 1983
season.

Puerto Rico, which dropped a 3-0 decision to Canada Wednesday, led early in the
opening game and had a 9-7 lead before the United States used a 7-1 scoring run
to take charge of the opening game enroute to a 25-16 win.

After leading only 9-8 in the second game, the United States used an 8-1 run to
take control in a 25-14 win.  Puerto Rico used a five-point run to tie the
third game 10-10 before the United States took charge with a 6-1 spurt enroute
to a 25-16 victory.

The four teams will compete in a round-robin format with a final-day playoff to
determine which of the four teams advance to the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.
