LIHUE, KAUA'I, HI. - Four Evian Pro Beach Volleyball Tour teams
advanced to the next rounds of competition after earning berths
here Friday (September 26) for the double-elimination bracket play
in the Best of the Beach IV.

Led by the upset-making tandems of ninth-seeded Liz
Masakayan/Elaine Youngs and 12th-seeded Pat Keller/Marla O'Hara,
the four qualifying teams from Friday join the top four seeded
tandems of Lisa Arce/Holly McPeak, Karolyn Kirby/Nancy Reno, Barbra
Fontana/Linda Hanley and Karrie Poppinga/Angela Rock when play
resumes Saturday at 10 a.m. (HST) at Nawiliwili Park.

Also advancing to Saturday's competition are sixth-seeded Linda
Chisholm and Deb Richardson, and seventh-seeded Elaine Roque and
Dennie Shupryt-Knoop.

The 12th and final stop on the 1997 Evian Tour, the Best of the
Beach IV concludes Sunday starting at 9 a.m. at Nawiliwili Park
with six teams still in contention for the $10,000 first-place

Hosted by the Kaua'i Marriott Resort & Beach Club on Kalapaki
Beach, the $50,000 Best of the Beach IV is co-sponsored by the
County of Kaua'i, the Kaua'i Economic Development Board, the Kaua'i
Visitors Bureau and the Kalapaki Beach Resort Association.

The Best of the Beach IV, the fourth and final "major" event on the
1997 Evian Tour, semi-final matches will be held at 11:30 a.m. and
12:30 p.m. Sunday.  The third-place match will be played at 2 p.m.
followed by the championship match at 3 p.m.

Both the tandems of Masakayan/Youngs and Keller/O'Hara scored a
pair of upset wins Friday.  Masakayan and Youngs, who won the
Chicago event in July, routed eighth-seeded Gail Castro and Gayle
Stammer 15-0 and fifth-seeded Krista Blomquist and Christine
Schaefer 15-4 before defeating Keller and O'Hara 15-6.

Keller and O'Hara, who became the first 12th-seeded team to advance
out of pool play in the Best of Beach competition, started Friday
by out-lasting Blomquist and Schaefer 15-13 before downing Castro
and Stammer 15-9.

Roque and Shupryt-Knoop, the oldest "elite" beach volleyball team
in the world, joined Masakayan and Youngs with a 3-0 mark Friday as
the pair upset Chisholm and Richardson 15-10 to advance to bracket
play as the sixth-seeded team.  Roque and Shupyrt-Knoop also
defeated 10th-seeded Danalee Bragado and Ali Wood 15-13 and 11th-
seeded Jennifer Meredith and Leanne Schuster 15-9.

Chisholm and Richardson finished with a 2-1 pool play record along
with Keller and O'Hara as the pair defeated 11th-seeded Meredith
and Schuster 15-6, Bragado and Wood 18-16 (the highest scoring Best
of the Beach match ever).

Masakayan and Youngs, the only rookie to ever win a pro beach
volleyball event, face fourth-seeded Poppinga and Rock in the other
10 a.m. match Saturday.  Poppinga is a former University of Hawaii
All-American now residing in Mililani.  Second-seeded Kirby and
Reno play Chisholm and Richardson while Roque and Shupryt-Knoop
challenge third-seeded Fontana and Hanley, who dropped a 15-7
decision to Arce and McPeak in last season's Best of the Beach III
