USA MEN ADVANCE TO 2000 SYDNEY OLYMPIC GAMES

The United States men's volleyball team earned their fifth-straight trip to the
Olympics by scoring a 3-0 (25-20, 30-28 and 25-21) win over Canada this
afternoon (January 8) at the University of Manitoba's Investors Group Athletic

to the Canadians Wednesday, earned the Americans a NORCECA Zone (North America,
Central America and the Caribbean) berth in the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.  The
United States earned a berth in the Continental Cup finals by scoring a pair of
3-0 wins over Puerto Rico (25-18, 25-18 and 25-13) Thursday and Mexico (25-19,
25-20 and 25-13) Friday.

With the win, the USA men have now qualified for seventh Olympic Games since
1964 when the sport was introduced into the Olympic program.  The United States
men won the Gold Medals at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games and the 1988
Seoul Olympic Games.  The men earned the Bronze Medal at the 1992 Barcelona

Lakeland, Fla. (January 8) - The United States women's volleyball team will be
trying to follow the lead set earlier today by their male counterparts by
earning a berth in the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.  The USA women face Canada in
a 7:30 p.m. (EST) match at The Lakeland Center.  Tonight's match is the second
in two nights between the two countries with the United States defeating the
Canadian women 3-1 (25-22, 22-25, 25-14 and 26-24) Friday evening at The
Lakeland Center.

The winner of tonight's Canada versus the United States earns a NORCECA Zone
(North America, Central America and the Caribbean) berth in the 12-team women's
competition at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games (September 16-October 1).  Cuba, a
NORCECA Zone member, has already earned a berth in the 2000 Sydney Olympic
Games by winning the FIVB's Women's World Cup '99 title in Tokyo, Japan
November 16, 1999.  The United States placed ninth in the FIVB's Women's World
Cup '99 while Canada did not compete.

The USA women are currently listed 10th on the FIVB World Ranking while Canada
is 14th.  Both teams earned medals at the 1999 NORCECA Championships, September
21-26, in Monterrey, Mexico.  The United States earned the Silver Medal after
dropping the title match 3-0 (25-14, 25-15 and 25-19) to Cuba.  Canada, which
dropped a 3-0 (25-14, 25-13 and 25-16) decision to Cuba in the NORCECA
semifinals, captured the Bronze Medal by defeating the Dominican Republic 3-1
(25-21, 25-19, 19-25 and 36-34).

The United States women will be seeking its eighth Olympic Games berth.  The
USA women earned a spot in the 1984 Los Angles Olympic Games (Silver
Medallists) and the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games (seventh) by being the host
country.  The United States qualified for a berth in the 1980 Moscow Olympic
Games, but did not compete.  The United States also competed in the 1964 Tokyo
Olympic Games (fifth), the 1968 Mexico City Olympic Games (eighth), the 1988
Seoul Olympic Games (seventh) and the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games (Bronze
Medallists).
