Metzger & Wong Lead Men into Paul Mitchell KOB "Final Four";
Youngs & Arce Top Advancers In $150,000 Queen of the Beach Play
LAS VEGAS, NEV. - Kevin Wong and Stein Metzger, the top two-seeded players,
lead four men into Sunday's final rounds of the Paul Mitchell King of the Beach
competition while Elaine Youngs and Lisa Arce paced the four women advancers
following action here Saturday (September 8).
Defending King of the Beach champion Mike Whitmarsh also advanced with Wong
from the men's Pool C action, but 2000 Queen of the Beach Barbra Fontana fell a
set short of advancing to Sunday's "final four" action at the Hard Rock Hotel &
***. Sunday's play starts at 10 a.m. (PDT) on the purpose-built AVP Hard
Rock Beach Stadium sand with the final two matches scheduled to start at 2:30
and 3:30 p.m.
Metzger, Youngs and Arce advanced to Sunday's action with 3-0 pool play
records. Metzger advanced as the top team from men's Pool D. Youngs and Arce
won the women's Pool C and D, respectively. All three teams pocketed $5,250
each for winning their three matches Friday and Saturday.
Wong and Whitmarsh posted 2-1 pool records in men's Pool C. Saturday's other
qualifiers for Sunday's action were Brent Doble, Sarah Straton and Holly
McPeak, the 1999 Queen of the Beach champion. All three teams were 1-2 in pool
play with Doble and Stratton advancing with 4-4 set records.
McPeak entered Saturday's final women's match needing to post a 2-0 win with
Youngs over Leanne Schuster and Wendy Stammer along with having a better point
ratio. Behind a 21-17 and 21-10 win with Youngs in 35 minutes, McPeak
out-scored Stammer by 10 points to advance to Sunday's action.
While the women played only one match each Saturday in two pools of four
players each, the men had to play two matches Saturday in their two pools in
the heated Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP) action.
A total of $95,000 has already been awarded in the competition with Metzger,
Arce and Youngs earning $7,750 each. Sunday's winning player in each gender
will earn an additional $10,000 for being the King and Queen of the Beach.
Tickets are on sale for the final day at the Hard Rock Hotel & *** Box
Office (800-693-ROCK) or through any TicketMaster outlet. Ticket prices range
from $15 to $90 for Sunday's final six matches. The 10th annual Paul Mitchell
King & Queen of the Beach, being hosted for the fifth consecutive year by the
Hard Rock Hotel & *** in Las Vegas, concludes the eight-stop 2001 AVP Pro
Beach Volleyball Tour. The special tournament has players switching partners
for each match.
The official entries for The Paul Mitchell King & Queen of the Beach were
identified with a player's top three finishes during the 2001 domestic season
determining the top 14 players in each gender for Las Vegas. Echo
Entertainment of Studio City, Calif., has been taping The Paul Mitchell King &
Queen of the Beach action for broadcast September 19 on FOX Sports Net. Chris
Marlowe and Heather Cox will handle the commentary.
