ARCE/MCPEAK LEAD EVIAN INVITATIONAL

EAST QUOGUE, N. Y. - Top-seeded Lisa Arce and Holly McPeak won all
three of their matches in convincing fashion here Saturday (August
2) to pace the field in the $50,000 Evian Invitational at the
Neptune Beach Club on Dune Road in The Hamptons on Long Island.

Arce and McPeak out-scored their three opponents by 33 points to
earn a spot in Sunday's final four.  Four teams will play off
Sunday morning to determine the last three berths in the eighth
annual event featuring the top eight teams from the Evian Women's
Pro Beach Volleyball Tour.

Winners of six of nine Evian Tour events this season, Arce and
McPeak defeated fourth-seeded Karrie Poppinga and Angela Rock 15-6,
fifth-seeded Linda Chisholm and Deb Richardson 15-4 and eighth-
seeded Gail Castro and Gayle Stammer 15-2 Saturday to capture Pool
A competition.

Four teams ended Saturday's play with 2-1 match marks and will play
off starting at 9 a.m. (EDT).  Second-seeded Karolyn Kirby and
Nancy Reno face fourth-seeded Karrie Poppinga and Angela Rock while
seventh-seeded Elaine Roque and Dennie Shupryt-Knoop challenge
third-seeded Barbra Fontana and Linda Hanley.

Pool B play produced three upsets Saturday as Roque and Shupryt-
Knoop scored seed break-throughs by downing Fontana and Hanley 15-
12 and sixth-seeded Krista Blomquist and Chris Schaefer 15-9.

The 9 a.m. winners will advance to an 11:30 a.m. final four match
with the losers playing again for the right to face Arce and McPeak
at 12:30 p.m.  The final four winners play at 3 p.m. as the top two
teams battle for the $12,300 first-place prize.

Arce and McPeak are shooting for their fifth-straight Evian Tour
grand slam title as the pair started their streak of "major"
championships by winning the 1996 Evian Invitational crown by
downing Olympians Fontana and Hanley in the finale at New York's
Central Park.

Echo Entertainment of Encino, Calif., will be taping the Evian
Invitational for distribution via FOX Sports and its regional
