FONTANA HARRIS/HANLEY EARN OLYMPIC BEACH VOLLEYBALL BERTH
BALTIMORE, MD. - Barbra Fontana Harris and Linda Hanley won two
matches here Friday (June 7) in the final four round of the United
States Women's Beach Volleyball Olympic Trials to earn a berth on
the United States Beach Volleyball Team for the 1996 Atlanta
Fontana Harris and Hanley, who now join Holly McPeak and Nancy Reno
on the United States Olympic Beach Volleyball Team, defeated Elaine
Roque and Dennie Shupryt-Knoop Friday afternoon at the HarborView
Complex to earn a spot in the 18-team Olympic beach competition
July 23-28 at Atlanta Beach in Clayton County, Ga.
Fontana Harris and Hanley jumped to a 7-4 lead before Roque and
Shupryt-Knoop scored eight straight points to take a 12-7 lead.
Roque and Shupryt-Knoop served for the match four times by leading
14-11 before Fontana Harris and Hanley scored the last five points.
Earlier Friday, Fontana Harris and Hanley defeated Gail Castro and
Deb Richardson 15-6 to advance to the first qualifying match in the
United States Women's Beach Volleyball Olympic Trials. Roque and
Shupryt-Knoop earned their spot in the qualifying match by
defeating Janice Harrer and Gayle Stammer 15-9 earlier Friday.
Roque and Shupryt-Knoop still have an opportunity for a spot on the
United States Olympic Beach Volleyball Team when they play the
winner of the match between Castro and Richardson and Harrer and
Stammer, who face each other Saturday at 10:15 a.m. at the
HarborView Complex. The third berth on the United States Olympic
Beach Volleyball Team will be determined Sunday in a 12 p.m. match.
Fontana Harris and Hanley earned a spot in the final four by
finishing as the second ranked United States team on the 1995-96
FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship-Series circuit.
McPeak and Reno secured the No. 1 spot on the United States Olympic
Beach Volleyball Team by finishing as the top ranked tandem from
the United States on the FIVB tour.

The Evian Women's Pro Beach Volleyball Tour will resume competition
June 14-16 on Dorchester Beach in Ocean City, Md. for the $100,000
Evian U. S. Open. The event is the first of four "major" events on
the 1996 Evian Tour.
