SIX TEAMS STILL IN CONTENTION AT BEST OF THE BEACH IV
LIHUE, KAUA'I, HI. - Led by top-seeded Lisa Arce and Holly McPeak,
six Evian Pro Beach Volleyball Tour teams remain in contention for
the Best of the Beach IV following play here Saturday (September
26) at Nawiliwili Park.
Arce and McPeak, winners of seven of the previous 11 Evian Tour
events this season, scored two wins Saturday to advance to the Best
of the Beach IV semi-finals along with second-seeded Karolyn Kirby
and Nancy Reno.
Remaining in contention for the $10,000 first-place prize in the
$50,000 Best of the Beach IV are the tandems of third-seeded Barbra
Fontana/Linda Hanley, fourth-seeded Karrie Poppinga/Angela Rock,
sixth-seeded Linda Chisholm/Deb Richardson and ninth-seeded Liz
Fontana and Hanley, who dropped a 15-7 decision to Arce and McPeak
here last season in the Best of the Beach III finals, open play
Sunday at 9 a.m. (HST) against Masakayan and Youngs with the
winners advancing to the semi-finals against Arce and McPeak at
approximately 11:30 a.m.
Poppinga, the former University of Hawaii All-American, and Rock
are challenged by Chisholm and Richardson at approximately 10 a.m.

the Beach IV concludes Sunday at Nawiliwili Park with a 2 p.m.
third-place match followed by the championship finale.
Hosted by the Kaua'i Marriott Resort & Beach Club on Kalapaki
Beach, the $50,000 Best of the Beach IV is co-sponsored by the
County of Kaua'i, the Kaua'i Economic Development Board, the Kaua'i
Visitors Bureau and the Kalapaki Beach Resort Association.
The Best of the Beach IV, the fourth and final "major" event on the
1997 Evian Tour, is being taped by FOX Sports for replay the week
of October 5.
With the two wins Saturday, Arce and McPeak are guaranteed a
fourth-place finish in the Best of the Beach IV to become the
Women's Professional Volleyball Association's second winningest
team ever in terms of money ahead of the former tandem of
Kirby/Masakayan ($405,415) with at least $406,050.
With a least one more FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour event left
this season, Arce and McPeak need only to earn $10,830 in the last
two 1997 events (WPVA/FIVB) to become the winningest United States
team in terms of earning in pro beach volleyball history.
Reno teamed with McPeak to earned $416,880, including $110,000 in
FIVB bonus pool dollars, to set the standard for WPVA teams. On an
average, Arce and McPeak have a better average per event ($14,872)
as compared to the McPeak/Reno ($12,261) and Kirby/Masakayan
