I've used a tightly laced wrestling shoe for both a weak ankle and a broken
toe.  If that isn't enough support, then I would use a strong tape job.

I use an ankle support I purchased at Walgreens-
it laces up and is most of a shoe with the toes and heel cut out -
costs about $25 and can be purchased at Walgreens or
some of the on-line pharmacies.

Ankle braces don't really work in the way people believe they do. If you think
about it intuitively, an elastic bandage is nowhere near strong enough to overcome
the force of what is essentially a lever with 150-200 lbs. at one end. If it were,
it would have to severly restrict motion.
