Outboard trouble shooting ?

Post by david_l_barcom » Fri, 22 May 1998 04:00:00

A friend of mine just bought a new old used boat for a good price and
has a question.

17' trihull bowrider with

1972 Johnson 125 HP Outboard motor. (2 stroke, 4 cylinder)

The engine runs good but cuts out for 1 second every 20 to 40 seconds.
The engine has not been used much recently and needs a tune up but
this problem existed 4 years ago when the boat was last used.

Any tune up hints?

Any ideas on what could be causing the cutting out problem?

Try the fuel system first fuel pump carb rebuild both are easy on this motor
and if you plan to us it much both will add to reliablity in the long run. Hope
that it is not an Ignition problem these parts are expensive for that motor and
some they don't even make any more. The power pack is the most common part to
go in the ignition plan on about $200.00 or so for that part. That generation
Johnson I have had great luck with I still use a 100 H.P. from 1972
If you have any questions drop a line.

Don't do like I did and leave the ignition switched on. It smoked the power
pac not once but twice..
