Leg Cramps During Swimming

Post by Rob La » Fri, 02 Jun 1995 04:00:00

Does anyone out there know of a remedy for cramping of the gastrocs
during swimming? I have this past week started some open water swimming
(with a wetsuit) and had this problem both times out. I've been involved
in the sport for several years and had this before but not to this extent.
I usually ride home after work (about an hour) then drive to the lake (30
min.) and swim about 2300m. I've also been training for an ultrarun and
have increased my milage from the usual 30-40 to 55-65 (I don't run on
swim/bike days). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Rob,

Have you tried *really* staying well-hydrated during and after the
ride?  I know that when I've tried the same ride/swim thing you're
doing, that it has helped me.  Even when I haven't felt the least
bit thirsty, unless I've literally forced my fluid intake I can
usually count on a cramp hitting my legs while swimming.  Anyhow,
it's an easy and cheap experiment to try for yourself.

Try vaseline on the affected muscles before the swim.  It'll keep'em
even warmer.

I had the same problem in a previous tri and I was had to
quit after the swim (I was not able to run out of the water! :-( ).
I've got cramps because my wetsuit seems to be too tight.

This problem also most likely can indicate dehydration. Make sure you
drink enough fluids the day you plan to do your open water swim.

I find I get problems with calf cramps in the water when I don't stretch them on a regular basis.  If this is your problem it
will probably take a while to get them limbered up.
