Wife is cramping on evening runs...

My wife is having problems with cramps in her side when running.   Doesn't
matter what time of day (morning or evening) and doesn't depend on eating
beforehand...she's experienced it when not eating for several hours, as
well as when she has eaten something light (banana, yogurt).   She's
getting annoyed as it's spoiling a lot of good running days!   Any ideas
on what's causing this?  And no, it's not related to that 28-day PMS
thing.

Something that worked for me....concentrate on inhaling as the right
foot is striking the ground, exhaling as the left foot hits the ground.
Reason for this is that the heaviest organ, the liver, is on the right
side & is not fully supported while exhaling & while the foot on that
side is striking the ground at the same time. I find it easier to
breathe on a 4-beat cadence, inhaling on right-left-right, exhaling on
left.

Hey, whatever works.

Wife is cramping on evening runs...

When I first read the subject I thought your wife was giving you
a hard time about running every evening.

When I run, I sometimes get cramping or a stick in my right side.
I have narrowed it down to two areas of concern. It usually only
happen when I haven't stretched before a run. Even then it seems
to be related more to hydration than anything else in my case. I
have also found that sometimes it's from getting my cadence too
high (with stride too short, which I get fom not stretching) and
breathing in time with my cadence, not with what my lungs
actually need (baxically hyperventilating)

Hope some of this helps.

Hi. I was having the same problem your wife was last year. A running
coach told me it could be a number of things; not drinking enough water
prior to your run (this includes the night before if she is running in the
morning), not enough potassium, and not breathing properly.

I really worked on the water thing and that seemed to help me quite a bit.
I am one of those very strange people in the sports world, I do not like
bananas, so I looked to other sources for the potassium. Runners I know
still swear by the bananas. Tell her also if she is not doing it to work
on slow steady breathing. I count two in and two out.

Good luck to her. I hope this little bit of information helps.
