Others can tell you about events in ***ia and Maryland that may be
closer, but here's a candidate to consider.
It stretches your travel budget a bit at 2-1/2 hours, but you might
consider the Triangle Triathlon in Cary, NC (near Raleigh) on June 21. It's
a sprint distance event: 0.5 mile swim, 15 mile bicycle, 3.5 mile run. The
TT was my first triathlon (last year), and I recommend it highly.
The swim is an out-and-back in a lake that's easily warm enough to do
without a wet suit; the bicycle is in suburban Cary and rural Wake
County--fairly flat with a few hills--and is well marshalled; and the run
is through suburban neighborhoods where folks spectate from their front
yards (offering a hose down if you like). Very well organized, with a
helpful first timer's orientation. You can get more information from
InsideOut Sports in Raleigh at 919-755-6202.
As for being a newbie, you've come to right place. Ask away. Of course, the
FAQ is helpful as well. One good place to find it and lots of other
triathlon information is at Marty Miller's The Triathlete's Web:
Have fun training, and let us hear about that first race!
