Triathalons near Norfolk VA?

Post by Anjan Chakrabart » Mon, 07 Apr 1997 05:00:00

 Hello all,

I am going to try a triathalon this summer and am looking for the
'perfect' first one. For me (for a variety of reasons) that would be a
sprint distance triathalon within 2 hours of Norfolk ***ia sometime
between mid June and September. Does anyone know of such an event? Any
help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Anjan Chakrabarty

PS.
I've got quite a few newbie type triathalon questions. I'm going to see
if I can track down a FAQ in a minute but if there is a more newbie
oriented place for me to post please let me know. Thanks.

There are several sprint triathlons very close by.  In early June
(probably the 7th) there's the Breezy Point Triathlon in Norfolk, at the
naval base. At the end of the summer, in early September, there are two
more.  One is the Outer Banks Triathlon in Manteo, North Carolina (less
than 2 hours from Norfolk) and another is the Sandman Triathlon in
***ia Beach (less than 1/2 hour from Norfolk).  These last two are
usually on consecutive weekends after the Labor Day weekend.  In between
there are several other triathlons in the Richmond area, the details of
which I don't know.

I recommend you try the Breezy Point Triathlon, and if you like it you'll
other opportunities throughout the summer to tri some more.

There is the Breezy Point triathlon on the Norfolk Naval Base in late
May.(1K/20K/5K)
Usually around the same weekend there is a military tri on Fort Monroe
(500yard/20K/5K) but you have to be military or a civilian employee.
There is the Outer Banks trio in Manteo, N.C.  (windy/traffic on bike leg)
a few weeks later
The Sandman is held in September with an ocean swim  of V.B.
Also in September is the make a wish in Richmond and one in Bethany Beach
Delaware around the same time.

I have moved south to FLA but good luck!

P.S. try out the weekly training runs from Running, etc... store and the
Saturday rides from Colley Ave Bike shop.

Others can tell you about events in ***ia and Maryland that may be
closer, but here's a candidate to consider.

It stretches your travel budget a bit at 2-1/2 hours, but you might
consider the Triangle Triathlon in Cary, NC (near Raleigh) on June 21. It's
a sprint distance event: 0.5 mile swim, 15 mile bicycle, 3.5 mile run. The
TT was my first triathlon (last year), and I recommend it highly.

The swim is an out-and-back in a lake that's easily warm enough to do
without a wet suit; the bicycle is in suburban Cary and rural Wake
County--fairly flat with a few hills--and is well marshalled; and the run
is through suburban neighborhoods where folks spectate from their front
yards (offering a hose down if you like). Very well organized, with a
helpful first timer's orientation. You can get more information from
InsideOut Sports in Raleigh at 919-755-6202.

As for being a newbie, you've come to right place. Ask away. Of course, the
FAQ is helpful as well. One good place to find it and lots of other
triathlon information is at Marty Miller's The Triathlete's Web:

Have fun training, and let us hear about that first race!

There's a free magazine called METRO SPORTS that you an pick up at your
local bike shop.  I found it devoted to triathletes this month with a race
schedule on page 26 that puts Triathletemag and Inside Triathlon to shame.
Warning, it IS local to the mid-atlantic.  So it's perfect for finding
stuff in Southern VA.  I found a sprint in Fredericksburg (a little haul
from Norfolk, but) that I'd never even HEARD of!
