Not discussed because at this early date it's all just low-probability
rumor.

I thought Allen said he would like to carry on until someone beat him.

Maybe medium-probability rumor.  I heard in a radio interview that Allen
said he is definitely not defending his title at Nice, and at this point is
not planning on going to Hawaii either, unless something happens to change
his mind.  Dave Scott said he'll do 2 half-ironmans and then decide.  The
first will be at Panama City Beach, I think he said on May 18th.  He said
if he doesn't feel he can at least beat Paula Newby-Frazier at Hawaii, he won't enter.

I wonder if this has anything to do with the fact that the Nice race will have
different organizers this year? And/or that it will be the official long-course
World Championship? Allen has shied away from World Championships (other than
Hawaii) since Avignon.

That's probably a pretty good benchmark for being a top-class male competitor.
How many men beat P.N.F. last year, five or six?

2:22?  This may be fantastic for a triathlete, but for an Olympic
marathoner?  I'd like verification of this as it seems a rather poor
standard for the Olympics (not that _I'm_ currently capable of it).  I think
the qualifying times for Australia's marathoners in the previous Olympics
was either 2:12 or 2:14.  No offense, but if 2:22 is the qualifying time for
US candidates, then it appears to be "jobs for the boys" at Atlanta.  In fact,
I'm sure there'd be heaps of US marathoners who'd be faster than 2:22 - at
least I'd hope so :-)
