Why do I get stomach cramps on the run?

Post by Scott Erdm » Tue, 09 Aug 1994 20:25:12

I'm puzzled!

I keep getting stomach cramps on the run.  I've tried just
drinking water instead of gatorade on the bike, but that
doesn't help.  I've tried to stop drinking on the bike about 7 miles
before the run starts, but that didn't work either.

Am I hydrating too much or too little?  Am I drinking too close
to the time that I have to start running?

What the heck is my problem?

Thanks,
Scott

Dear Scott,

Your stomach cramps might very well be caused by Gatorade, but you
should also take a good look at what you ate 12-24 hours before running.
For example, I used to get horrible stomach cramps half-way through my
afternoon run. It didn't happen every day, but enough to scare me. I
started thinking about what I ate on those days and finally narrowed it
down to cheese sandwiches. I stopped eating them and I have not had a
cramp since! You might very well have a lactose intolerance that upsets
your stomach. You might want to try avoiding milk products for a couple
of days just to experiment. If that doesn't help look at other things in
your diet.

Hope this helps!

Try swallowing a charcol pill when you start the run...
