My wife and I are newbies and will be doing a short tri very soon.  Can
someone provide a detailed equipment checklist? Have any tips about common
mistakes or do's/don'ts beginners make?

Thanks

The basics (I believe in traveling light):

Swim
  swimsuit
  goggles
swim cap (they often give you one in your race packet, and expect you to
            wear it)
towel (to wipe your feet off before you put on shoes in T1)

Bike
  bike (duh)
bike shoes if you have clips
full water bottle on bike (stay hydrated!)
  flat-fixing kit

Run
  running shoes
race # pinned to front of body somehow

Misc
USAT card or $5 for a one-day license

Good luck!

I know this was an oversight.  HELMET, you can't race without one.  In
fact you shouldn't even be able to try out the course without one.

In lines with the towel to dry your feet I've found a water bottle to wash
the dirt and sand off your feet is a plus!!

Yes, thank you. I guess my helmet never leaves my car trunk unless I'm
riding, so I don't really think about it. But yes, you do need a helmet.

Remember the Gaff Tape. It is the force..It has a light side, a dark side and
it will hold the universe together.

When you're out on the road it will get you out of more troubles than you know.
I've seen it hold pumps to frames, patch cuts in the tires, hold frames
together, keep seat poles from sliding, hold down water cages, hold aerobars
on and in combination with some tire patch glue, a metal scrapper it actually
held a pedal on a MTB for 30km+.

Tip: roll it around your tire levers.  Its more convient to carry it this way
than it is to carry a roll.
