My 2300 also came has a seven speed but with the new 130mm spacing. You
should be able to place the 130 wheel into your drop outs because the
spacers are beveled and should spread the frame. 4mm is not a big distance

I was looking at buying racing wheels this year but have a Trek 2100 with
a  7 speed Shimano 105 group and a 126 MM drop out.  I did not want to
purchase a seven speed rear wheel just as it was being replaced with eight
speeds.  The newer eight speed bikes have 130 MM drop outs.  Has any one
out there upgraded a to eight speeds?  Can aluminum drop outs be expanded
to 130 MM?  Any advice appreciated.

Some people have reported problem with a high failure rate of axles
when the rear wheel is installed this way.  The high failure rate
presumably occurs because the dropouts are forced out of parallel by
the spreading action.  YMMV.

Mike,

It is very easy to "spring" 4mm out of your dropouts. You just pull them
apart with your fingers as your put the wheel in the frame. I do reccommend
that you move to 8sp rather than spend more money on 7sp stuff. All you need
are new shifters and a new cassette (and the 8sp hub). However, I would not
suggest spending money just to gain 2 extra gears, IMHO you need another
reason to make the change.
