question:leg cramps on run

Post by Rob Connel » Wed, 20 Mar 1996 04:00:00

I have had some experiences with severe cramping in my quads and
hamstings on the run portion of races.  Does somebody want to shed some
light on this subject?  Is it from poor hydration, or ill warming up, or
just going to *** the bike?  Any opinions on this would be greatly
appreciated!

..Rob

Hydration is always a possibility with cramping but give this a try on
your next bike/run brick...Try a fast transition to running gear and get
going right away to imitate race conditions. Start your run with leg
turnover approximating your cycling cadence but with a short stride. Keep
your legs moving fast and gradually increase your stride during the first
mile. I find that I have very little leg trouble this way, compared to
trying to start with a full stride, and by keeping the legs turning over
fast the *** gets moving to the muscles and little speed is lost.

I seem to get less of this with each passing season.  It may be
conditioning, or it may be better hydration.
