Once a world champion always a world champion?

Once a world champion always a world champion?

If I had been the 19** World Champion Triathlete, would I still be a world
champion in 98? Assuming the worlds had been held and I hadn't won. I'd be a
former world champ, or an ex world champ.

If I had won an Olympic Gold Medal, I'd always be a Gold Medallist, wouldn't
I?

Just a odd question that came to me the other day while looking at a famous
triathlete's website.

And a further question is Rina Hill still the World Indoor Triathlon Champion.
From memory they havn't held another indoor championship since then.
