Saying that Saucony (and New Balance) are "made in the USA" is like saying
your Ford is a US car. It may be assembled in the States but a large
portion of the components are imported.

Most of Nike's operations as I understand it are now in Indonesia --
probably one of the worst offenders of human rights, etc. under the
truly evil Sukharto regime, which incidentally enough, has been
substantially propped up with arms sales, economic aid, you name it
from . . . the good ole USA.  (Tell it to the East Timorese!)

As I heard political theorist Michael Parenti tell it once, Nike moved
its manufacturing operations, which initially had been mostly in the US,
to Indonesia over the past few years, but of course not because they
wanted to cut the consumer a break.  That pair of Air Jordans that used
to cost maybe $20 a pair for labor now cost them $7.50 . . . but did they
reduce the suggested retail to reflect their savings?  Of course not!  It's
about Nike maximizing their profits, and nothing else.  And then there are
the incidental effects of the artificially suppressed (as in forcibly, and
even ***ly) labor forces in Asia, like the deflation of labor prices in
the rest of the world -- like here.

I'm looking for some new running shoes myself . . . I think I'll opt for
New Balance!

Hope this clears some of the issue up for you!

Solidarity forever,

Beth

I understand your feelings. I worked in the Philippines. The expoitation
exists  with most shoe companies, as well as textile and apparel
companies.
Nike is not the only one.
