ITU ISSUE AND CLEVELAND CONGRESS

I RECENTLY SENT A COPY OF THIS LETTER TO STEVE LOCKE, USAT PRES. AND
NOMINEE FOR ITU PRES.:
I HAVE JUST READ THE POLICY LETTER CONCERNING THE ITU AND THE CLEVELAND
CONFERENCE. I AGREE WITH YOUR POSITION AND THINK THAT THE TIME HAS COME TO
CREATE A NEW BEAUROCRACY. THE ITU'S LACK OF APPRECIATIONFOR IT'S
CONSTITUENTS IS DISTURBING AT BEST. IT'S METHODOLIGY OF ENFORCEMENT OF
RULES THROUGH INTIMIDATION AND FORCE MUST STOP. A CHANGE IS NEEDED. BUT WE
ALSO HAVE TO ASK OURSELVES: DO WE WANT ANOTHER RENAISSANCE IN THE SPORT
SOP SOON TO THE ACHIEVEMENT OF OLYMPIC STATUS? THE SPORT HAS BEEN IN
TURMOIL FOR A GOOD TIME NOW FOR ONE REASON OR ANOTHER. WETSUITS, DRAFTING,
IRONMAN QUALIFYING, ETC. I THINK IT IS, UNFORTUNATELY, A TRAIT OF THE
GENERALLY EGOCENTRIC AND OVERACHIEVING MENTALITY THAT DOMINATES THE SPORT.
YOU JUST SEE THIS AMOUNT OF INFIGHTING IN OTHER SPORTS. THIS IS WHY
VOLLYBALL AND MOUNTAIN BIKING HAS BEATEN US TO THE OLYMPICS. WILL THINGS
BE NICE AND CIVIL NOW THAT STEVE LOCKE IS IN CONTROL? I REALLY DON'T THINK
SO. I WOULD LIKE TO BELEIVE THAT BUT I DON'T THINK IT WILL HAPPEN. SO THEN
WHAT HAPPENS, THE IOC SITS BACK AND WATCHES ANOTHER TRIATHLON WAR WHEN
MACDONALD SUES SOMEBODY FOR BALLOT STUFFING. THEN USAT AND SOMEBODY ELSE
COUNTER SUES. IT READS LIKE A DAYTIME SOAP. THE BEAUROCRACY OF THE SPORT
HAS BECOME A JOKE. CAN IT BE CLEANED UP? I REALLY HOPE SO. I WOULD LIKE TO
THINK THAT HE IS THE GUY TO DO IT.

What is your POINT????

Sit back and let Less keep in control? yeah right. If we, the
majority of trithaletes feel a certain way, we should fight for
our views and support those that have common views. Are you
proposing we sit back and shut up just to stop a battle? That's
not gonna happen with the passionate triathletes I know.

Let's support Steve Locke and hope he can right the wrongs Less
has forced down our throats over the last little while.

p.s.  If you're not going to say something constructive and
useful, SHUT UP. remember, if you're not part of the solution,
then you're part of the problem.

THANK YOU, TriDork!  This was EXACTLY what I was thinking upon reading
that post.  It made very little sense (not to mention was incredibly
poorly written), and there really is NO NEED TO SHOUT, especially when you
don't have a point.

I would *almost* speculate that that post was an ITU plant...Nah, couldn't
be.  Could it?

Jeez, you guys (includes women) sure are mean.  Paranoid too.

With my limited computer skills, lack of grammatical (is that a word?)
skills, and unfamiliarity (is that a word?  it should be if it isn't) of
the news group lingo, I'm almost afraid to write anything.  Is there some
kind of a program I can buy that will rework my thoughts, and translate
them into proper, rst exceptable, english?  I know that spell check thing
really helps me out a lot.

I suppose it can only help in the long run, since I'm thinking about
finishing school soon.  I never did well (good?) in English, so I suppose
I can use the advice.

I guess most people who use on-line services, and have computers are
probably more educated than the normal person.  Now that I think about it,
this is the perfect forum to practice my grammar skills.  I mean....... I
bought my computer for the cool games.  My hand eye coordination has
definately improved, though, so it hasn't been a total loss.

Now I've forgotten my point.

Oh yea.  I need to remind myself to ask Traci (my wife, and editor) how to
use the spell check thing while on-line.  I don't want to embarrass myself
any more than I have to........which is already a lot.  That reminds me:
or puncuation errors in this note.

Sincerely,

Jimmy Riccitello

p.s.  I think that Steve Locke is the better man for the job.  Things will
never be nice and civilized when it comes to politics, but they'll
certainly be more democratic with Mr. Locke in there.

Damn it!  I always spell definitely wrong.  Thanks.  I'll try not to make
the same mistake again.

I know how to spell punctuation, though.  I was just trying to see if you
were paying attention............You're good!

No, normal is educated.  Just not quite as educated as more educated.

Hey, gimme a break, I was being facetious with that "plant" remark.

Ok, ok, you nail me on this one, Jimmy.  The English Major snob in me came
out on all fours, and I failed to repress it (something which I generally
keep a tight rein on!).  I think I reacted so badly to that poor fellow's
post because a number of folks have made remarks about all the rhetoric
flying around about the ITU & drafting issues generating "more heat than
light," and I was annoyed that someone was throwing more fuel into that
"hot" fire without adding further illumination.

And yes, I really *was* being facetious when I speculated about an ITU
plant.  It was just another way of being catty, for which I will take my
lashes like a good scout.

A bit abashed---

It's great that a vote is on the agenda for the Cleveland Congress and all, but,
someone please tell me: How do these votes come about?

Is Les McDonald's leadership up for a vote at every Congress, although
triathletes worldwide who have the power to make nominations just didn't
know this?

Has he held on to his position for years because there simply were no
other nominations for the presidency?

I have simply never heard of a vote for the ITU presidency before. Maybe that's
because Les McDonald never wanted others to know that it was a possibility
all along, if only in the little-seen bylaws.

No one has ever explained to me, or RST or the greater triathlon community,
just how the ITU president gets put in place.  Would be nice to know the facts.
I think most of us had this horrible impression that we were stuck with
Les For Life. It's good to know there are options, apparently.
