Cramping during run

Cramping during run

Post by michael p.herli » Thu, 03 Jun 1993 20:51:53

I had an experience recently during a double sport workout.

I biked then ran.  During the run, on two occasions, one of my
calfs cramped and I was unable to continue.

Is there some stretching or exercise that could avoid this?

Is this fairly common?

Thanks -
Mike

Perhaps it could have been due to a lack of fluids/electrolytes.  You
may want to consider drinking more during the bike portion of your
workout...be it water, GatorAde, Exceed, whatever.

One thing about sports drinks that you probably already know.  Make
sure that you try them in training first, NOT in a race.  I was
stupid and broke this "golden rule" last weekend during a 1/2-marathon.
That morning I decided to drink some Exceed Hi-Carb.  I didn't
notice any ill effects and was having a great race up until mile
9 (51:28) when all of a sudden my stomach cramped up and I was
_immediately_ forced to dart off into the woods... :-(
