IME swim/bike/run cutoffs?

Post by Jsou » Tue, 21 Nov 2000 04:00:00

I was just filling out the application for Ironman Roth and noticed that the
cut-off times are different from what I thought was standard. The bike/run is 9
hr :30 min., the total cut-off is 15 hours. I thought that the standard was 17
hours. I am concerned because it is my first Ironman as it's possible I could
take the full 17 hours. Danke!

Hi Johanna,

might be a mistake...last year I remember some women (starting first
wave at 6.10am) finishing at 10pm or later...
considering the last wave starts more than 1h after them, they
are allowed to finish at about 11pm or so...you have the 17hrs
there...
don't worry anyway, the organisation is awesome, Detlef Kuhnel
makes everything possible to put a great event (including having
the lead vehicle behind the leaders now and not in front of them...
that was some point of controversy in the past), and with the help
of the spectators you'll make it...they are so noisy you try to
go as fast as you can not to get deaf!

I believe each IM may set its cut-offs slightly differently including the final
finish time if the race staff so wish.

I wouldn't get too discouraged worrying about the finishing cut off.  I guess
each event is somewhat different but as a back of pack person in the past at
the IM distance I have still always had a good experience.  In only one race
was I actually over the final cut off time and they allowed me to continue as I
was still moving well on the run/walk but just slowly.   At another event I
think the overall cut off was 15 or 16 hours but with the e***ment of the
race I finished under the cut off time although I had worried about it pre
race.  I guess one always has to worry about finishing and being fair to the
race staff but in general things work out.  Enjoy!
