$100 for Cleveland ITU race?

My views on politics and personalities aside, charging triathetes $100 for a
1.5k/40k/10k race is outrageous.  What justifies an entry fee that high? I don't believe
the fee in Munice is that high. It is another ITU world championship. The time and
resources needed for a half Ironman are far greater than a international. Is it as
simple as greed?

I agree.  I was astonished at the site of a $100 entry fee.  Must be some
t-shirt.

$100 for Cleveland ITU race?

Post by TUCKERN » Fri, 31 May 1996 04:00:00

I got my flyer in the mail yesterday for the "Citizens Race" and was also
incredulous at the $100 price tag.

My guesses are:

1) We're subsidizing the World Champions and Pros who don't pay entrance
fees?
2) We're paying a premium to race the same course on the same day as the
World Champs and pros.
3) They've got to pay for the glossy full color brochure sent out to all
USAT members somehow.
4) This is a world class event that is worth the $100 based on food,
t-shirt, swim cap, etc. you'll receive
5) The entry fee is actually meant to discourage participation.  In fact
the brochure sent out to everyone is meant to drive awareness and increase
tv viewership so the ITU can prove televising its events is worthwhile to
the network.

p.s. What was the price tag last year?

$100 for Cleveland ITU race?

I went to the duathlon worlds last year, and found the price tag (of
around $100) well worth it.  Organization, support during the race, and
the dinner/celebration afterwards was fantastic!

For the person who was asking what the 1995 entry fee to the citizens'
race in Cleveland was, compared to the $100 entry fee for 1996: It was $60.
Professionals paid $75, and relay teams $100.
