Stomach Cramps

Hi All

My son suffers intermetently with stomach cramps on the run. This has
happened in a number of races and although we have worked on upper body
position (running tall etc.) it still happens.

He doesn't eat within 2 1/2 hours of a race.

Any help appreciated

Wayne

What kind of cramping?  Is it the standard "stitch" variety in the
ribcage or is it more nausea related?  What race distances?  What's
his nutrition?

If his core strength (back and whole abdomen) is low he'll get excessive
torso movement and exhaustion of that part of his body, causing cramps.
Perhaps some core strength exercises could help? E.g. pilates, leg
raises, swiss ball. Its the core strength work that makes all the
distance athletes have such defined stomachs. (Sit ups tend to only hit
the top part of the abdomen and misses the part beneath the navel, the
obliques, and the sheet underneath.)
