Sport Today

Hi Triathletes, Tri-Maryland Triathlon Club, with over 6000 members,
producers of over 35 events per year in tris, bis, mtn bike, runs, in line
skates, kids events, swim and track meets are now available to athletes
across the world for info on events.  A believer in the fact that
Triathlon exists because of the age group triathlete,  we help race
directors and athletes across the country and the world to produce events
that are profitable, safe and fun.  We are a nonprofit organization that
have been very succesful in producing great events and setting up
satellite groups in Spain, Germany, Russia, Colorado and northern New
Jersey.  We do not cater to the pro triathlete, but assist the athletes
who support the sport with answers to their questions, regarding
sponsorship, interests, and how to meet people in their area with similar
multi-sport tendencies.  Our 1995 schedule will be out in early December.
With nearly 4500 seperate athletes participating in our events in 1994, we
are looking for 1995 to being a stepping stone to better things to come
for multi-sports in the country for years to come.
Before I sign off and pick up my kids from school, I would like to say
that Tri-Maryland does not support Tri-Fed, its sanctioning or heavy
handed control over the sport.  The sport belongs to the race directors
who spend numerous hours developing events and ensuring their success.
Tri-Fed is basically an insurance firm which does little to boost the
success of an event.  Athletes, volunteers and race directors are the ones
that make the sport happen.  We believe that there are cheaper and better
ways for the sport to progress than by the artificial demands of a
so-called national governing body.  Has anybody ever voted for their
command?  Yeah, we like to create controversy.  See you down the road.

well, i don't want to sound ungrateful (especially since i live in
maryland), but my personal opinion is that triathlon and all other sports
belong to the athletes and fans, not the owners, race directors, etc.
however, having raced in as well as volunteered to help in numerous
running, cycling and triathlon events over the years i very much
appreciate what the race directors do (or rather, go through, put up with,
etc.)

Wrong again Brad, the sport belongs to the athletes. As a former member of
Tri Md I enjoyed the events that the club put on, they were very
instrumental to my getting involved in the sport. I appreciate the effort
the RDs put into the races, and realize they get little in return. But the
sport is about the athletes, with out race directors we would still swim,
bike & run,   but a race director sans athletes would be nowhere.

Athletes are the consumers in triathlon, and should dictate the type of
products ( ie races) that they desire. Tri Md has always provided us with
the types of races i have  enjoyed and i hope that Brad as well as the
other race directors will return the emphasis to the athletes.
