Wetsuit, Desoto T1 not working

Post by IMKe » Mon, 29 Dec 2003 13:38:39

Well, I tried my best to learn how to get out of a Desoto T1 but give up.
I actually bought it a couple years ago and Emilio fit me to it using my
body size which I provided.   I have a size 4 suit and I weight 165 lbs.   I
emailed Emilio a couple times and he assured me that the suit was right for
me.     I tried it then but gave up so put it in the box.  I should have
returned it but never got around to it.   Dumb.   Either my suit is marked
incorrectly and the wrong size or I have the wrong idea of how it should
fit.

When I put on the long john bottoms they sort of squeeze me uncomfortably
all over.  very tight on my legs and I believe I would cramp before
completing IM distance.    I tried to swim in just the johns but the
tightness forced me to abort the swim.     I was able to get into the top
but it was extremely tight.   Not so much around my chest as it was around
my arms and neck, especially the lower arm, forearm and my arms are not big.

Getting out of the top  was another story.  It took me and two big guys 7
minutes to free me from the thing today.   I thought I was going to
suffocate first.   We finally managed to get it over  and off my head so I
was free except for my arms.   It was very difficult to even get my arms out
of the overly tight sleeves.

Now I need a suit to swim in at IMNZ in March but this T1 will not be it.
I tried it again today and it's impossible.    I might try the Desoto
zippered top in size 5 but I can't get any response on my questions from
Desoto.  Perhaps I will just purchase another good ole reliable QR or some
other one piece.

Ken, sounds like it might be a mi-labeled suit. Any chance Emilio could
measure it if you send it back to him? Maybe sending him more detailed
measurements of yourself? You've been broken and re-assembled so many
times, you might not be shaped normally ;-)

By the way, what's the air and water temp there right now? Just need to
know it's nice somewhere.

Hi Tom,

Well, I tried emailing the Desoto Site but they don't answer.     I will try
again before I give up as it is not like Emilio to ignore an inquiry.

Weather here has been OK,  Temp about 68 at sun-up and 75-79 in the
afternoons.     We were supposed to get thunderstorms and flash flooding
today but the sun is shinning now.   I will hop on the bike and see how far
I can get before they come.   I had planned on a 120 miler today.   In the
process of setting up the Computrainer again so that I can get through these
cool or wet days of Winter.

Have a nice day there in the Panhandle.     Get those miles in for your
IMFL.

I suspect your suit is marked incorrectly.  There's too many people that
love T1's.

I've got a size 4 top & bottom; I'm 5'11" & 170lbs (165 race weight).  The
top is a little snug, but then again, my shoulders are really big & my waist
is pretty small.  All in all, my suit is really comfotable, really fast, and
it's pretty easy to remove (30 to 40 seconds on a slow day).  Oil, pam, or
body glide are NOT necessary.

Give Emilio a call.  If he's not in, I'm sure he'll return your call -
holidays are always difficult though.

Good luck, and have fun training for IMNZ!

It could be mislabeled.

It might need to just stretch some.

I surf and when I start wearing my wetsuit after a long summer of not
wearing it, I have a hard time getting it off after hours of paddling
because my upper body is so weak.  To help, I wear a rash guard underneath
the wetsuit.

Hey Tom,

Weather turned out great.   Bright, sunny at about 74 degrees.   had one
downpour for a couple miles near Kaleheo but otherwise got 120 miles of
great weather.    Ride was through rolling hills with some long flats tossed
in.   Total elevation gain about 5000 feet.   Wind today was down from
normal so did not have to beat *** the way back.   Was just a good
cruise.   Average HR for nearly 7 hours was 141 bpm.  Avg. speed was a slow
17.0 mph, not too bad with all the hill tossed in.  No really high climbs.
Highest is about 700 feet at one shot.   Next week I will include the Waimea
Canyon Climb just for fun.  That is 16 miles to 4200ft continuous with a few
15%  half mile, knee bending, grades.

How is the weather in North Fla.?

Well, we are not all that different in size.   I am 5' 11 1/2" and weight
168, normal and also 165 when race ready,  small or medium boned so wrists
are not exactly large.   I do feel that the suit is incorrectly sized. It is
marked as a size 4 top and bottom.     I will lay it out flat and measure
the width of the top and circumference of the arms for Emilio's review.   I
like the concept and might try one with a zippered top if I can get a
response from Desoto.

My ride yesterday was only 100 miles less!

I don't think you can get 700 feet above sea level here unless you ride
your bike into an elevator!

Yikes. Enjoy!

Beleive it or not, it was 65 degrees ans mostly sunny! The rain starts
tonight, and then the low will be in the 40s, with cooler weather for a
few days after that.

Mahalo Kurt,

I checked the website and yes, closed till the 5th.    I'll check with them.
I think I will try one size up, a 5 instead of the 4 and get it with a
zipper.  I'll call tomorrow.

Ken
