Ironman Germany -- other triathlons in July/August ?

Post by Bela Ba » Tue, 10 Feb 1998 04:00:00

Hi folks,

I just learned that my application for Roth98 (Ironman
Germany) was rejected. Due to the fact that you have to
QUALIFY for Roth, starting next year, a LOT of people sent
application forms.

So now you have to qualify for Ironman Germany to be able to
qualify for Hawaii , that means an Ironman to qualify for
Roth, then Roth to qualify for Hawaii, and then (finally !)
Hawaii itself ?

Are there any other Ironman races around July/August ?
Preferrably in the US; I'm located in upstate NY. I've seen
people talk about Wildflower/Florida etc. Any URLs on th web
?

Bela,

Try www.ironmantri.com/domestic.html.  There is one in Allentown, PA on 2
August and one in New England in Aug.

Good luck.

...in the California wine country.  They don't, unfortunately, have a
website, but the info about the races is probably available on the Ironman
website where the qualifiers are listed.

Good luck!

There is Ironman Canada in Penticton, BC, at the end of Aug. (Aug 30).
It hardly needs to be said that this a great race.  It is, however, to
late to get into the race as it filled up by the end of Sept. '97.  There
are qualifying spots available, and the nearest one to you is Muskoka,
Ontario.  More info can be found on the IMC website  (www.ironman.ca).

WTC - Are you listening? You have to qualify for Hawaii. You have to qualify
for Roth. Canada sells out a year in advance. Hmmmm, could it be that you have
demand out there for more Ironman sanctioned races? Someone suggested
sanctioning a second tier of qualifying races, such as the Great Floridian.
That would be nice, but what the sport really needs: more Ironman races.

I recognize that someone might argue that you need to keep the "Ironman" brand
races "special." But that makes absolutely no sense to me. Just because you
create a new Ironman race in the United States or Europe or South America that
isn't as famous as Hawaii or Roth or Penticon does not mean that Hawaii or Roth
or Penticon will be diminished in any way. In fact, they will be enhanced and
affirmed as a place where the best of the best go to race.

David Yates, could you please let us know why this doesn't make sense? I can't
understand the WTC's logic in not further expanding the franchise.

Could anyone please confirm this ? There had never been any thought of
a qualification for IRONMAN Europe in Roth. Not 1998, and not in the
following years. Perhaps your application was rejected, because IMR is
allready full ? When did you sent your application to Roth ?

For this year's Ironman Europe  you don't have to qualify (just send
your application early enough). But
in the race information  it is said that you will have to qualify for
next year's race !

So in 99 I'll race once and qualify for Roth, then I race again in Roth and
qualify for Hawaii (some hope, sub 9:30 in my age group) and on the line in
Hawaii I line up next to someone who got in through a lottery. Hmmmm, or
maybe I missed something? With the advent of qualifying for qualifying will
the lottery be left as an option?

I received the information booklet with my application. In it, it says
that 1998 is the last time without qualification. Starting 1999, you have
to qualify. This is confirmed by the fact that on the application form
you have to mark whether they should send you material regarding the
qualification for next year or not.

So it looks as if we will have to qualify.
