Katy,

Thankyou for IMHO the best net coverage of Kona ever.

Ironman: Men's age-group results

Todd Jensen asks, after perusing the results: >>>>   Only one second
separated 1st and 2nd in the Male 25-29 age group!  Was it a sprint
finish?  Ouch... >>>>>

Indeed, it was a sprint between two very competitive Germans, winner
Alexander Taubert (8:49:19) of Mannheim and Matthias Klumpp (8:49:20) of
Pfullingen. In '93, Taubert won the 18-24 group, while Klumpp won the
25-29s. Now Taubert is 25 and Klumpp 26. (A year ago, Taubert's time was
8:55:59 and Klumpp's was 8:50:05).

Their splits suggest they were aware of each other's every move: on the
swim, 58:20 for AT and 59:58 for MK; on the bike, 4:52:39 for AT and
4:52:05 for MK; and on the run, 2:58:20 for AT and 2:57:17 for MK.

More amazing, I find, is that these two men finished 12th and 13th
overall. The Germans who placed higher were pros Jurgen Zack, Olaf
Sabatschus (23 years old) and Lothar Leder (also 23) in the 4-5-6
positions. These two also beat two other German pros, Jochen Basting (13th
pro) and Holger Lorenz (14th pro), who finished in the money.  So, even
without Dittrich (home with an injured knee), the Germans took six of the
top 15 places overall !!!

As for McCormack, results list him from Auburndale, MA. Is he the same guy
who won IMCanada a few years ago? I don't know myself; he didn't stick
around for the awards ... Can Jeffrey answer this one?

Yes.  He qualified in Muncie.  He wanted to race as a pro, but the only
qualifier available to him was Muncie, and his federation in Spain (where
he lives) does not delineate between pro and age-group.  Qualifying in
age-group, he was obligated to race that way.
