Benefits of Olympic status??

As far as I know, once a sport is recognized on the Olympic programme,
its international federation is eligible for annual financial aid.
However, I doubt if an entry sport such as triathlon will receive much
money as compared to IAAF (tract & field), FIFA (soccer) or FINA
(aquatics). In any case, if I remember correctly, triathlon is only
guaranteed on the Sydney programme, and will not necessarily be kept on
it afterwards.

: Triathlon was just accepted by the IOC. Can someone from an Olympic sport
: tell me what real benefits Olympic status will give our sport?

: Thanks

Well, I'm not from and Olympic sport, but I do know what it did for
Curling & Freestyle.

Becoming an Olympic sport means alot of attention will be on your sport.
Triathalons are not really big draws compared to soccer, basketball,
baseball, tennis. But the sport is gainning ground, and now hopefully
people will watch more than just the Ironman, and those who don't do at
least that already, will learn that Ironman was a race before being a
presidential watch.

Good luck in '96 (if that's when they are premiering)
