Atlanta Olympics update

Just heard about some changes that have now been officially approved for
the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta:

Women's soccer has been accepted as a full medal sport.  With the World Cup
coming to the US in 1994 and the fact that the women's US team is currently
world champions, Atlanta expects this to draw as many people as the men's
games.

In cycling, many changes have been made.  The 100-km team time trial has
been eliminated.  Added to the program are individual time trials for both
sexes, a women's points race, and cross-country mountain bike races for
both sexes.

In track and field, a women's triple jump has been added.

Also, pairs beach volleyball tournaments for both men and women will
receive full medal recognition.

Other previously approved changes include the increase in the number of
teams in many women's team sports and the scheduling of the Opening
Ceremony on Friday night, instead of Saturday.

No new sports have been added, and none have been eliminated.  All changes
have been made within the disciplines of previously existing sports.

True.  Someone has already noted changes in fencing (women's epee).  Other
sports that will "look a little different" include (yes, those two most folks
seem to love bashing here) synchronized swimming and rythmic gymnastics.  The
former will include an eights competition (an apparently common event)
to replace one of the existing classes (solo or duet).  The latter will change
one of the apparatus as is usual (don't know which right now - I'm sure
someone will fill us in), and possibly include a group event as well.
