I am dying to know what his 100m split was. If it was 10.00 (extremely
fast for a guy who doesn't run the 100m), then his second 100m was 9.32!
What gives here? He broke the 17 year old former world record by 4 tenths
of a second. That is almost as unbelievable as Flo-Jo's record in the
100m. I hope he takes a shot at the 100m. BTW, congrats to Frankie
Fredericks, who also broke the previous world record with a time of 19.68.
Imagine running a 9.89 100 and a 19.68 200 and only getting two silvers.

According to Rick Morrissey of the Scripps Howard News Service, the
splits were (1) 10.12 and (2) 9.2.

Other people have pointed out that Carl Lewis has run a faster 100 split
on relay legs (in the 8.8-8.9 region), but Johnson had the disadvantage
of having to run 100 metres before that.

Anyway, this does not say that Michael Johnson is not great. He is the
most impressive short-mid distance runner ever. People will be watching
tapes of that 200 for a very, very long time.

This is what NBC would like to say to make you pumped up and all worked up.
What about reaction time (you are disqualified if it is less than 0.1 sec)
and the time to gain full momentum? Only NBC can make such stupid remarks.

PS: Before you shout his other unparallel achievement, a french woman won
both 200m and 400m.

Johnson's achievement was indeed unprecedented, as he was the first man
to double in the 200 and 400 in an Olympic Games.

Of course there's an easy way to settle this.  Johnson's got his
double golds in the World and Olympic games, so why doesn't he switch
to the 100m next year?

Running a fast race and running fast are two different things.  Someones top speed might be much faster than the person who wins the race but because of a bad start/slow acceleration/running out of gas etc. the "faster" person might come in dead last.  As an example, I bet a real quick running back in the NFL would beat Micheal Johnson in a 40 yrd dash, but get totaly blown away in the 200.  

It would be interesting to see the top sprinters in the world run on a straight track for 200 yrds, and clock their speed with a radar gun(if this is possible).  This would clarify who is the "worlds fastest man", rather "the man who runs the worlds fastest race".  What do you think?

It would be interesting, yes. However, no race in teh world award any
medal to top speeder. So, the sprinters don't really care what kind of top
speed they run, I would think.

PS: imagine an olympic event in the style of high jump where every
athelete is given a track to freely achieve their top speed and you are
given three tries and the top speed wins the gold. Quite uninteresting if
you ask me.
