NBC 's Olympics Coverage

NBC 's Olympics Coverage

Post by Hank Lewi » Mon, 05 Aug 1996 04:00:00

NBC's coverage of the Olympics continues to amaze. On my scorecard NBC's
boring coverage receives a perfect 10 for focusing almost exclusively on
the American athletes, for deifying those same athletes in inummerable
and lenghthy video bios, and for devoting too much time to tennis,
"twirling", and "horse jumping" at the expense of more popular sports
(such as soccer) in which the American entry had been eliminated. Lawd
help us if the US ballroom dance team reaches the gold medal round in the
2000 Olympics. That could be a dizzying experience!

Rather than covering the 1996 Olympics, it appears that NBC actually
covered the 1996 American Olympians. That is unfortunate inasmuch as the
Olympics is a rare opportunity for we American viewers to become somewhat
acquainted with sporting events popular elsewhere on the globe.
Hopefully, future Olympic coverage will "cut to the chase" and not leave
the viewer wondering "where's the beef?" .

Again, to NBC and their demographics of lowest common denominator, if it
ain't American, it won't matter.

I'd like to see how bad the ratings took a hit this weekend where they had
to show events where Americans consistently lost.

not great but certainly better than what is available on the sickly
peacock.  Has anybody heard of a favorable reaction(NBC execs shush up)
to the NBC coverage.

Don't hold your breath.  US amateurs have never been able to make the top 24
at the World Championships.  (The cynical might wonder about the connection
between this and the USOC's anti-ballroom position).
