11 positive Chinese tests from Asian Games!!!!!!!!!!

Post by Geoff La » Wed, 30 Nov 1994 09:26:47

Reported in todays Melbourne "News" 29th, November 1994.

11 Chinese Atheletes returned positive drug tests at the recent Asian Games
7 swimmers, 1 Track and Field, 2 canoests, 1 track cyclist.

The report did not say whom, what they tested positive from or if they were
male or female.

I realy thought that no-one could get caught nowdays no matter what they
took, as long as they were careful. I suppose random, suprise testing does
work!

It has restored my faith in drug testing a bit.

If FINA really wants to get serious, they'll rescind any
world records set by the athletes that tested positive as well as
imposing competitive bans.

I didn't expect such a stunning, revelatory demonstration of
how well-founded the suspicions of the international swimming
community were to happen this soon.   Now, perhaps, athletes in every
country will see the importance of random testing in-season in order
to preserve the integrity of the sport.

No doubt they'll all get the same 2 year international ban that Wang Aihua
got (she's one of the 7 swimmers) which will be extended to domestic
competition by the Chinese authorities (like Wang Aihua). I would hope that
FINA would co a "Ben Johnson" and strip them of their titles and world records.
I would say that they would have to. After all, who's going to bust their ass
trying to break a record tainted by ***. It adds extra psychological pressure
if you know that not only do you have to swim faster than anyone has ever swum
before, but that you also have to swim faster than Ms X who was on the juice.

On a related not, I read yesterday that the IAAF is going to make athletes
sign a form which says that any disputes over drug tests/bans will ba carried
out in accordance with their rules/procedures. This is to avoid any further
cases like Butch Reynolds'.

I must say I feel very sorry for all the chinese-origin writers here
in the net who tried to protect their countrymen from the "wrong"
accusations. Your reaction was ok, and we understand, but it also
showed us your "black spot in the eye" i.e. the lack of criticism
and the wrong kind of nationality to call all critics as racists.

If so many athletes were caught it only shows their total lack of
respect on any international codes of conduct or their competitors
in the athletics, and such a behaviour should be punished the
hardest way on the international arena! This case has a direct
resemblance to the East-German over-sized superego with which it
has the same roots as if I am correct they even had some old East-
German swimming etc. coaches, who never seem to learn.

punishment is out of time, it's dumb and non-creative. what needs
to be done is to make sure it stops happening and that it won't
happen again. I think it's the German swimmers who refuse to swim
in any contest that has some chinese in them, what is this??
If not racism, it's a serious case of prejudice. After all,
China has random dope controls, what else do people need?

On the other hand, the slap in the face China has given the world,
is kind of brutal, and they've lost all respect they could ever have.
It'll take a very long time to rebuild it -- how many do still think
"oh yeah, doped!" when somebody from Germany wins something and you
find out he or she is from former east-germany?

Actually, it may depend on when and where they set the records.  I
believe Wang Aihua's world record will stand, since she actually
tested negative at the meet where she set it.  Of course, if she ends
up admitting that she had taken *** all along, they would erase the
record, as they did with Ben Johnson.  It may vary from athlete to
athlete.

No opinion of mine; just what I've read in the papers.

Yang Aihua never set a world record.  The world record in the
400 freestyle is 4:03.85 by Janet Evans, set in Seoul.  No one
except Evans has come within two seconds of it since.  Since
1989, only Evans has broken 4:07 (and she has done it only
twice, going a 4:05+ in 1990 and 1993).  Yang swam a 4:09 in Rome to
win the World __Championship__.  I don't see anyone breaking
Evans's record anytime soon.
